Ok guys i have a question concerning the hurst shifters. I wanted to know what was the main difference between the competition and the billet shifters. I know that the billet one is more expensive so it's better? But what if you can get a good deal on the competition, is that one ok? What would make you choose one over the other. And, is it worth getting the competition if its cheap.

 

The comp is made of steel, The billet is of course made of billet aluminum. I think both have pretty much the same shifter assembly, although the billet has slightly improved bushing material inside the assembly. The billet has shifter stops, I don't think these are recommended though because the tremec 3650 has it's own stops and from what I've read using the stops on the shifter can cause transmission damage. I think that both models suffer from the rattle that occurs at higher rpms, although this seems to be hit and miss with both. I was looking at both and ended up going with the saleen because of the cost and the reliability.

 

Well I found a pretty good deal on the hurst competition one. I was just worried about not being strong enough.

 

I have the billet and highly recomend it! its definetly more sturdy built than the competition. no rattles,vibration or noise here whatsoever...although it seems to be hit or miss with some people ( some have issues,some dont). I did notice my 08 has foam insulation under the shifter boot,which probably helps with the vibration and noise(my buddys 05 doesnt have it and rattles like crazy) plus i used blue loc-tite on the shifter bolts as well,which definetly helps! the retro looks of these shifters alone makes them worth every penny! LOL. hope this helps some!

 

I actually called Hurst myself on this same issue about 6 weeks ago... they actually told me unless you race your car the billet shifter is not worth the extra money. Although they are proud of it he said the comptetion model is perfect for a street car... and I confirmed it when a friend of mine bought a Shelby GT and it has the excat competetion Hurst shifter I was thinking about buying! Good enough for Shelby... good enough for my car! I get my car back from the body shop next week and cant wait to get my new shifter installed!

 

Im sure you cant go wrong with either one! the billet is a little beefier than the competion, which to me is stronger! the fit is also a bit tighter...the rear bolt had to be pressed to fit into the rear bushing,which i feel made it more solid and less prone to rattles etc.in the end they both look the same inside the car...just a matter of whether you want to spend an extra 50 bucks or so for the billet!
