Default gearin question

alright i've been split on which size gears i wanna put in. i see a lot of complements on the 4.10s but i'm thinking those would be too aggressive? its a daily driver and i get stuck in stop and go traffic from time to time but then again i love low end power and i have a bad tendency to down shift and stomp on the gas...i've been leaning a lot toward 3.90s. i'm stock except my SLP LM, tune(89 in right now) and CAI(from bbk). i do plan on getting the 255/50/17 nitto nt555s which should help me on getting some grip.

what do yall say? are the 4.10s more of a drag gear, are the 3.90s as well?

just lookin for some help. thank yall

I love my 4.10's. This is my DD. I commute 13 miles no highway, weekends I do one 150mile round trip. The 4.10'are without a doubt the sweetest gear for town driving. The sound is really good the acceleration fantastic. The 4th gear on the highway is magic. The 5th gear even is aggressive. I ride the highway between 80-90 mph on a vert with borlas. It is sweet. If you throw the forth at that speed and floor it you will be amazed from the pull on the 4th. For regular passes no need to change the 5th. Just press the throttle. (watch for cops because you are in the 100's very easy).

410's and never looked back. Go FRPP not the others unless you have loud mufflers to cover up the whine.

rly stupid,

I am in the same boat and I am from VA too, what part are you from and do you frequent the VA Mustang board?

Anyway the place I am going to get my gears will do $450 for the install and gears and they have a great reputation, however I think they are really pushing the 4:10's on me. They were offering a deal for either the 3:73's or 4:10's if we could get enough people but i ended up being the only one signing up, that is when they emailed me saying they would do 4:10's for $450, I still going to email and see if they will do 3:73's.

Like you I do most my driving in town, my only concern is that every 3 Months I drive home to NY which is 335 miles one way to the east end of long island, so I am worried about the 4:10's being over kill. I also might get a super charger down the road and I heard with 4:10's it would be hard to keep traction.

Anyway alot of people say go 4:10's, but I dont think they understand that I never plan on racing, I dont care what my quarter mile is or how much horsepower I create, I just love a quick pick up and that is why I want to get better gears, same reason I am also getting a tune and originaly got a CAI.

You will feel the difference with the 3:73s from stock, but you will get the real kick with the 4:10s.

Dont fear the gear!!!!!! one of the best N/A upgrades for thee money and the loss in MPG is not as bad as some might try to lead you to believe.

I think alot of the problem when people keep suggesting 4:10's is that they think everyone is gear heads and also that we are all into racing. But truth be told I am just a regular guy that likes a car that has alot of pep but at the same time I still need it as a daily drive.

Once again though, my thought against 4:10's and reason I think i would do better with 3:73's

1. I never plan on racing, checking my quarter mile or any of that. I bought my mustang for fun and just like some pep, more then it has now, my tuner will be in shortly and I already have a CAI.

2. every 3 months I drive 670 miles round trip to Long Island and back all within 3 days. I am not worried about the gas mileage, more worried that the upper rev with 4:10's would drive me crazy during the 6 hour trip. Plus I am sure that is not the best for the engine.

3. Like i said down the road I might end up doing a super charger, I heard with 4:10's I wouldnt have the best traction, I dont plan on doing tire upgrades or anything else.

So honestly with what I am looking for in my car would you still suggest 4:10's over 3:73's? Remember I have factory 3:31's with an auto.
