Default Engine RPM Drop

I don't know if any of you have experienced this.

I have a stick shift, and when I start up in the morning, I have RPM drops that almost sound like my car is about to stall. This is when the car is in neutral and only the brake is depressed. Anyone have an idea about what causes this and how to fix it?

Thanks,
JC

If you have an OBD-II code reader, you could see if that shows a trouble code or a pending trouble code. Sometimes those readers can pick up something before the CEL illuminates.

I think the standard answer for "weird idle problems" on this site is "check/clean your throttle body and MAF sensor". Never had this problem, but I'm pretty sure that's what everyone else is going to start with

Try a search on "throttle body" or "clean throttle body". I'm sure you'll find similar threads.

Also, if you have very recently disconnected the battery, the car needs to relearn the idle characteristics. There's a procedure in the user's manual under "Battery".

Good luck!

I would say either the battery or throttle body.

I had something close to this. I just bought some Throttle body cleaner NOT CARB CLEANER. Pulled off the intake hose and sprayed my throttle body butterflies and wiped it clean as I could get it.

Ran like new.

+1 on a dirty TB.
Also, check for any air intake connections that are cracked, loose, or missing, which can cause a vacuum leak.

The OP seems to indicate that the RPM's drop when he presses the brake. The only relationship there in my mind is electrical so I'm not sure what cleaning the TB would do. Assuming you're not having any other electrical issues, I'd chalk this up to "weird". Let us know if the TB cleaning helps.

True....might be a vacuum leak. Anybody know if the brake systems react this way on these cars?

I also have a 1970 Monte Carlo and the brake booster hose had a crack in it and when I pressed the brakes the car would almost die because of this. Not sure if our cars react in the same way.

TB cleaning worked. I can definately feel a smoother response to my acceleration and the RPM drop has disappeared. Thanks MFers!
