Whats a good method for busting a tack weld? Changing Mufflers again...
Hey everybody....
I need input for the best way to bust a tack weld free.
When I bought my Hooker Axle-backs they had no tips. So I had some nice and unique ones welded on. Well for some odd reason the guy decided to tack weld my mufflers to my tailpipes too....which I didn't ask for.
I need to get them off without jackin' up my stuff. They are literally just a small tack to keep the muffs from moving....but now I need them to "move"....off my car...
I might sound like a hypocrite (this is assuming people read my other posts....ha ha silly me) but I found a smokin' deal on some used Corsa's, and couldn't pass them up. So after years of talking smack about $700-$800 mufflers I finally own a pair.
I don't know jack about welding so this is my first time dealing with this.
Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

FYI an angle grinder works better for smoothing because they have a large flat edge but those are expensive and difficult to handle. I've seen people dismantle whole exhausts with angle grinders but this would be the pretty way of doing it.
What sucks is my dremel tool burned up a few months back. I was grinding rust off a filing cabinet and I guess it got too hot and the motor suddenly stopped and smoke poured out of every hole and crack on the tool. I checked the brushes and they were fine...so it is in the process of being sent back to Dremel for warranty work....hope they do it.
So I do have a Hitachi angle grinder but I think its a little big for this job....
I was thinking to use my Rotary Air Tool....I might be able to fit a Dremel grinding bit on the end of it....
+1 with the grinding wheel. I am not a fan of those small dremels. If you have an air compressor and a 90 degree angle grinder i would use that. I just find the dremel to be slightly less powerful than kitchen appliances
Like others have stated... definitely a cut off wheel of some kind, will work.
Dremel is fine (just slow) or a 3M cut off wheel rigged up on a Makita or an air tool if you have access to that...

I managed to use a cutoff wheel on my craftsman pneumatic die grinder.
As of 20 minutes ago, I am enjoying the sound of the Corsas. So ferocious....seriously....yum.
