Default Forced induction = cheaper horsepower?

I have heard many people say that adding boost to your engne is the cheapest way to add power versus adding bolt on N.A. parts to an engine. Is this really the case? An average basic twin screw ~(8-10 psi) is about $5800-6000 and adds about 160 hp, right?

Lets see how bolts ons stack up...(theoretically, of course)

Livernois ported heads 100hp $2900
Ford Hot rod cams 50hp (w/heads) $775
C & L intake 29hp ~$700?
Corsa mufflers (or other) 13hp $846

TOTAL 192hp $5221

This is assuming that the individual contribution of each part = 100% of advertised gain and that these parts work well together.

So that is $27/hp for the N.A. parts self installed and $36/hp for self-installed twin screw ($5800 and 160 hp). Plus there is still $600 dollars to go which could be headers or throttle bodies or other exhaust mods.

I know there is a lot more potential to gain horsepower with the blower, but what if you were just shooting for about 175 hp above stock?

Am I missing anything?

yea

Mufflers = no gain on a N/A car - suspect gains on a blown car

Hot rod cams & head... where did u get your HP gain estimates? you not getting 150hp out of that

CAI/Tune - more like 20-25 whp gain

Blower depending on tune @ 10 psi = closer to a 200hp gain.

450-475 avg whp vs 265-275 whp (stock)

only a few guys have gotten to 400whp NA and that was with stage 3 heads and cams, new springs, headers and exhaust and spent 8600 in parts (no labor & did it himself)

so IMHO your missing a lot

dont forget you need fuel injectors, fuel pump, tuner, ect.
supercharger kits usually come with all of that.

Also, just throwing on a supercharger or turbo generally won't hurt daily drivability much at all... a fully built motor like you're describing above wouldn't be pleasant drive daily in most conditions.

EagleStroker put down upper 380's on a Mustang Dyno (closer to 415whp) and he has stock heads and lowered compression. It really can't be that hard to put down 400whp NA, you just need a stroker kit.

Eagle has a stoker motor to 298cid as well and his heads are not "stock" they are ported and polished

I've seen him post that he spend 7500-8500 on the build

from his sig on a different forum:

"Eagle Stroker aka "The Stroker Stang"
"My 5.0" Eagle stroker, Crane cams, BBK Lt's, catted X pipe, Magnaflow Magnapack, P&P heads, BBK CAI "

those number are all bogus, 29 hp for the intake alone?? check the kenne bell site about no gains for mufflers, hot rod cams just sound good and maybe make 5 hp

C&L for $700 includes a tuner (and you will find are closer to $600)...Anyways, intake package alone with tuner on these cars adds between 10-20 RWHP...yes, that's REAR wheel HP on a 91 or 93 octane tune.
