Default Bounce and Bump Steer

The rear end of my 07 GT steps out a little when I hit bumps. My buddy's 09 has the exact same tires (Nitto 555) and his rides better. Were there any changes made to the rear shocks over the years on S197's? If not, can you recommend a shock that would soften the ride a bit?

thats cuz of the live rear axle. Aftermarket dampers help lessen it but doesnt cure it.

This would probably get more response in the handling section.
Maybe you should ask one of the moderators to move it there.

I've noticed it with my car and it's only got 1900 miles. it's the solid rear that's causing the issues. hopefully when I get the rear UCA and LCA's with the panhard bar everything will settle down.

having the solid rear is annoying for handling, the mustang is the first car I've owned with a solid rear. but at least when I add a lot more power I don't have to worry about the rear end blowing up

Mostly shocks, though the PHB could be responsible for a tiny bit of this. Bump steer is a front suspension geometry issue involving the tierod and suspension component inclinations, NOT what you're experiencing with the rear "stepping out".

If not, can you recommend a shock that would soften the ride a bit?
They're a little ways up the food chain, but single-adjustable Koni Sports (aka "Yellows") set at about 1/4 turn up from full soft seem to have quieted the back end down a bit. That's with OE springs, and I'm still on the OE struts.

I had this same issue but when I replaced the stock LCA's with BMR LCA's it improved. It's still there a little but the rear wheels seem to get planted back to the pavement a split second sooner after a bump.
