Trunk Lid Custom Finish
Anybody else feel like Ford (or at the very least Saleen) should have finished out the trunk lid like the rest of the trunk [&:] I got a quote from a highly regarded trim shop for $250, which included about 8 hours labor. So I decided to buy the material at another shop for $20 and do it myself. I spent 2.5 hours and am VERY happy with the results. Not to take away from the first guy as I'm sure he would have done a top notch job - after all he does OEM refurbs of Ferraris. But as a DIY'er I'm pretty damn proud of what I was able to do
What do you think?
Oh yeah - the silver plaque that you see is a Saleen plaque just like what is placed over the molded MUSTANG in the door sills. My plan is to put a chrome or mirrored Pony emblem above it.

A magician never reveals his tricks
It was really simple actally - I'm still very impressed (and suprised by the outcome)! I started with construction paper taped together to form a sheet about 50" x 12". I taped it up to the lid and traced out the shape, transferred it to the panel backing material (about 1/8" thick). I cut out the main piece, and cut out the carpet about 1.5" larger all around and used good ole duct tape (yes, the universal tool [8D] ) to attach it around the back. Once the carpet was on, I used 4 self tapping (very short) screws to attach it near the top where the trunk has support ribs that are about 1" from the lid (to avoid having a screw poke through [:@] ) I used double sided tape on the sides and bottom of the main piece - which seems to be holding very well. Then I removed the plastic cover of the light/latch area and repeated the process for the 2 side/angle pieces. Once they were done I wedged these two pieces just behind the main piece that was already mounted (where you can see the seam of the two pieces), and used two more srews at the top (which is actlally the license plate area) to hold them in place. All the screw heads are flushed, and spayed with adhesive and dapped with loose carpet to hide them.
I used the same spray adheasive to hold the carpet to the backing material.
Sorry - no step by step photos.

THAT looks GREAT Sowaxeman!
I was looking at mine over the weekend when I was installing the chaser control... wondering what/how I am going to do. I am thinking about using aluminum sheeting over the ribs. I also have some rolls of rubber material that is simular to the old fashioned trunk lining I was considering using.
THANKS for the pics.. and description.

Just thinking out loud here.... but this might be another way to achieve the same result and avoid the screws and duct tape.
Get some 1/8" hardboard from Home Depot, and cut it to fit the area you want to cover (using the construction paper technique as well). Then cut the carpet or other fabric so that it overlaps the edges by a couple inches all the way around. Use adhesive spray and stick the fabric on the hardboard. Wrap the excess fabric around behind the board, and glue it down (maybe using hotmelt glue). Then use adhesive velcro strips to attach it to the trunk lid.

I'm fine with everybody doing it - it SHOULD be done to begin with
If the double sided tape doesn't hold, the I have some 3M Super Velcro that I will use on the bottom and sides.
