Default Taking off heads without taking off front cover?

Has anyone tackled taking off heads without taking the front cover off. I am going to port and poilish my own heads and am testing a intake my dad built and he was wanting to take the whole damn motor out but I was like what a waste of time. But you have to remove the crank pully and water pump pulley. I am starting to take everything off but I think it is possible to remove the heads without the front cover, if your careful, any feed back would be greatly appreciated.
