Default Keys went bye bye

I was robbed last week and the keys to my 2006 mustang GT were stolen also. I was lucky that bastard did not have time to take my car but now I am in a jam. He has all my personal info, ID, etc. and now I need to secure my mustang.

I have yet to call the Ford dealer but wanted to know if there were any feedback on what needs to be done so they don't rip me off for anything unnecessary. Any idea what the average cost would be? I do have a spare key but it won't stop anyone from taking my car

You could try calling a local locksmith to see if you can get a different key programed. You could also contact Ford to let them know what happened. Did you buy the car from a local dealer? They would have all your info, but you will need some I.D. as well as something to prove that you live at that address.
In the mean time, I would park the car in the garage if you have one or at least block it with another car so it cannot be moved. Be careful of where you go leaving it unattended until you can get another key.

I got Smart Alert for this very reason. Ford's version of Lojack. $380 if I recall correctly and no monthly fee.

Maybe you could pull one of the fuses or relays when it's parked to keep it from being started. Too lazy to look but if there is one for the fuel pump, that should do it. That's what I would do. Keep us posted as to what the dealer says. Or if you have another car, maybe pull the battery out and lock the car up somewhere the thief knows nothing about.

I got the mustang stored right now, since I am unable to drive anyhow lol. I called the car insurance.. of course like your normal insurance company, they won't help cover. Apparently they rather have the car stolen than prevention.

I called the local Ford dealer, they want about $733 to replace all the locks, re-programming, etc and 2 keys. They want $150 ($75 each) for FOBS :x

I've read you can get FOBs cheap on Ebay. Is there any difference in quality or security? I think I read it was pretty easy to program those yourself, right?

were you home by chance? If you were then I would think your home owners insurance would cover that more so then car insurance. If you were just mugged on the street or something though, good luck.

I knew it would be expensive at the dealer but that is shocking. I think you need both sets of original keys and fobs to program any new ones. IIRC there is something about it in the owners manual.

I lost one of my original keys, and you have to have 2 keys to program a new one

I KNEW I FORGOT TO HAVE THE SALESMEN THROUGH IN A THIRD KEY WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. O well live and learn

Any way i went to a GOOD locksmith and they were able to flash my ECM and program a new key for me. She also said if i did find the key it would no longer start the car then she told me how to program it. But I think the Dog got a hold of it.

I did cost me $95 for a new key. 50 to flash and 45 for the key. But i am pretty sure it was cheaper then the dealer would have been. What happened to the good old days when any mom and pop hardware store could cut a key and bam it would start the car.

You could just have them flash the computer that train the key to the new code that way it could not be started at lest.

Yeah the dealer always wants an arm and a leg for parts and labor. I got an extra key for my daughter's Focus and they charged me $25.00 for the key and said it would be another $80 to program it....she only had one key. Local locksmith charge any where from $45-80 to do it.

Try calling some local locksmiths. They can program another key even if you only have one.
