Mine was alot worse than the pictures above. It was on the front edge of the hood, and underneath the front edge. I first saw it, I was like WTF now!?! Passenger side leak, broken seat back ****, now paint bubbles! Jeez...
How long did it take to do the first time? I'm just wondering how long it will be in the shop. I'm taking it in the morning. Since it's still under warranty, they are giving me a rental car.

I wonder if it is a problem common to aluminum hoods. I have an 03 Explorer with an aluminum hood that had this problem. It was bubbling along the front edge, I had it repainted, but it has since come back.

I don't drive the stang in the winter, and rarely when its raining out. Hopefully this will keep me from having a problem.

Yep, according to the TSB your 2003 Explorer is included. Here's the list;

FORD:
2004-2007 F-150
2007 Explorer Sport Trac
2000-2007 Crown Victoria, Taurus
2005-2006 Ford GT
2005-2007 Mustang
2000-2003 Ranger
2000-2007 Expedition
2002-2007 Explorer

LINCOLN:
2000-2006 Lincoln LS
2000-2007 Town Car, Navigator

MERCURY:
2000-2007 Grand Marquis, Sable

I don't think simply repainting it will stop the problem. The TSB states they have to sand blast the area down to the bare metal. Because of the nature of aluminum, the shop has to be curtained off to prevent cross contamination with other metals. That is what happened during the assembly of our hoods.

Here is the actual TSB;

I don't think keeping it in the garage matters if it will corrode or not. I don't drive mine in the rain either, so if I were you, I would get under that hood with a magnifying glass and take a good look. I was able to see more with my camera's close up feature than I could with the naked eye. It is hard to see, but it is there. Thank God for this forum or else I would have never noticed.

1st time they had the car for a week! 2nd time it was 2 days. (Didn't matter to me I have a DD Focus, the Mustang is just a spare/toy.)

Wow, weird stuff.

I just found this corrosion on the underside of the hood of my 2008 Mustang. My model year is not on the TSB though???

Is this a warranty item?

BTW, I just bought my 08 this week. Also, today the airbag light started coming on also each time I drive it.

Thanks

the TSB is old enough that it doesn't address the 2008+ cars yet. but they are covered by it as well.

Ford has a Quality control issue with their hoods and trunk lids. I had to have my 2008 Expy hood and rear hatch re-painted within 1 month of purchase for this issue back in April (left-over model from 2008)

whatever happens, don't let the Dealership give you a mediocre repair. My Expedition took 3 seperate trips to the Paint Booth before they finally did a decent job. It doesn't help that Black is an extremely hard color to match.

I took my car in Saturday, they said it would be Tuesday before I get it back. They gave me a Dodge Avenger as a rental. I just hope they do a good job, I'm bitting at the nails here!

Ford have morons doing the prep on those aluminum parts...
It's prone to corrode at the front edge because that's the part that contacts the most with the workers hands at the production line.
Now, said workers have guide lines to not touch the aluminum (or metal) sheets with bare hands for safety (cuts) and contamination reasons but they don't care.
Sheet metal is handled with magnets while being positioned in the molds for stamping.
From there, each part goes to the etching (priming) station with the body shell for pre-assembling before paint...

Aluminum doesn't stick to magnets so a worker has to be there to put the sheets in and out of the molds.
It could be automated as well but the factory don't want to spend money on another machinery just for aluminum parts.

I am not making this up, the Ford guys at SEMA gave me this explanation when I asked about this problem...
They could have Bullsh#t me but it does make sense anyway, given the little knowledge I have with production lines, lol.

HA.... I noticed mine about 5k or so miles ago and didn't do anything about it (procrastination). My hood is bubbling pretty bad in this exact place (underside lip of the hood). (I've got @46k miles)

I was just at the dealer to get my water pump replaced under the powertrain warranty and the service guy didn't sound knowledgable about this (not surprised) and said since it's an aluminum hood that Ford won't cover it. I'm going to have to educate him with this TSB but....does anybody know for sure if it's covered under the corrosion/rust warranty or not? Or am I just screwed but I'm out of my bumper to bumper?

I love this forum!!!

OH YEA and I'm double screwed because I have a hood stripe so even if they did cover it I'd have to loose the stripe

If you are out of warranty, they might not fix the TSB at their expense. I think it really depends on the dealer. You could contact Ford direct and see what they say.

The Ford guy who made the comment "since it's an aluminum hood, Ford won't cover it," doesn't know what he's talking about. Definitely print out a copy of the TSB and they will look at your hood, take pictures, contact Ford to get permission, then they will give you a call to bring it in.
I road by the shop today to see if they are working on mine......nope! Still sitting outside!
