Default Engine wine?

Has anybody had an engine wine (sort of like a sc wine) after starting up and going hard? I'm a volunteer firefighter and the other day I left work to go to a fire with entrapment so I didn't wait for the car to warm up (for obvious reasons) and I heard it. Ever happen to you?

I had a whine when my alternator was going out. It was worse when it was cold, and after about 2 weeks I got a CEL code P0340. That code is supposedly for a camshaft position sensor, but after researching, it seems that a bad alternator causes this, and that's what it was. You may want to throw a voltage meter on it just to make sure.
