Increase MPG over time?
In my attempt to educate myself about this car I may be running into some dumb info, but just to make sure I hope you guys dont mind me asking questions that may be obvious to you.
This question is about MPG. I have read that some people have noticed a gain in MPG on the 4.6 after they put about 10k miles on it. One person said they where getting 18-19 mixed when they bought it and they now get 22 or so after they broke 10k.
Is this bad info? Could it be that they drove like hell when they first bought it and their driving habits got better?
Sorry if its a dumb question, just curious.

As the miles increase, your engine will break in more and you will get an increase in mileage. It will eventually level off. Driving habits will have an effect, but the newness of the motor will also have an effect on mileage.

The increase in gas mileage as the engine breaks-in is very minor. I wouldn't expect more than a 1-2 MPG change. There are so many other factors that affect fuel mileage. You can run the exact same stretch of 400 mile highway at the same speed, same gas stations and have your mileage vary by more than 2-3 MPG, hand calculated AND by the computer.
wow, so there is some truth to it then, I thought that the engine ran best when it was new... maybe between 1-50,000??
if i can really get around 20-21 mpg going to and from work then it'll be just as good as my escape... scary. But of course the ol' escape is getting close to 100k.

I just rolled over 10K miles - my average lifetime mpg (I've been keeping track, sad I know), is just over 22 mpg, with a high of 25 (all highway) and a low of just over 19. My mpg has been pretty stable across all of the miles, highs are highway trips from NC to PA, lows are everything else.
