Default Whinning sound from rear end when making slow sharp turns.

What could this be? Happens in parking lots and residential streets when making slow sharp turns.

Constant whining sound, almost like something is rubbing. Tires have clearance all around, so that should rule them out.

HAd the same problem a while back. There is a TSB out there about this. It's most likely coming from the rear differential. They had to replace some "shims" and "sleeves" (I believe?) in mine, under warranty. Sound was a rubbing metal sound when making left hand turns around 10-20 MPH. It's gone now... GOOD LUCK

You know, I have this same sound. It only happens when taking slow right turns. It doesn't do it on left turns at all. I did have 4.10s put in mine and that's the only whining I really get from them.

It's either per the TSB or you need to drain and refill the rear and include the anti-friction additive.

If you have had the fluid changed and or had a gear change, you need to make sure they put the additive in. My gear installer put some high dollar synthetic in mine and swore I did not need the additive...3 days of listening to the crying moaning rearend and he was putting the additive in for me. It was dead queit within 2 miles from his shop.

...and I think it's actually referred to as "friction modifier" or something like that.

When I had 4.10s installed mine did the same thing after 500 or so miles. The shop add more friction modifier and that took care of the problem.

Either that or get your mother-in-law out of the trunk. You KNOW that's a fuel mileage killer, too.

A lot of fluids tell you you don't need to add friction modifier. Trust me, you do. In my case it was Redline - a fine product. I bought into the none needed, but in a slow turn, made noise. Added 1 bottle of Ford friction modifier and all was well.

My rear end is stock with 56k miles on it. I do plan on swapping out gears later this year.

Is adding some friction modifier something I can do on my own?
