Default Buying private

Alright everyone so I plan on buying an 06 GT from a private seller and need some tips. It has 27k miles on it and seems in pretty good condition. I want to go visit it soon and it's going to be quite a drive so it isnt that easy to go back and forth many times, my question is should I be bringing this to a mechanic? Also how much would one charge on average to get the car checked out? Could I take it to a regular shop or maybe even a Ford dealer down there?

I would guess one hours labor to check out a car. Call the dealer there and ask. You can check some things. First check the carpet on the passenger side front floor. You want to look for any water damage. Pop the fuse box on the right. Run a hose over the front windshield for a few minutes and check if any water is leaking into the front passenger cabin. You dont want that problem. 27k is not much mileage so there shouldnt be much wear n tear.

What is he asking for it and whats the blue book on it? I bought my 06 Gt back in October for 15,600 with 15k miles off a dealers lot. I worked him hard on the price.

That's a good price. I just bought mine last year with 24k on the clock (52k now ) Private seller. Was about a grand more...

Absolutely do a Carfax. No way around it. I ran away from several cars from what it showed up.

With that many miles on it, there's not much that can be wrong, even at that age. If it drives good, shifts smooth, tracks straight during cruise and braking... You can feel pretty good. Look for normal leakage, signs of bodywork, etc. Make sure fluids are clean.. try and look down the valvecover for sludge, etc...

Check the list of TSB's in the stickies so you're familiar with some of the S197's issues. Besides the water leak, check if he's had the fuel pump replaced. Drive at steady highway speed for about 10 minutes than accelerate 3/4-WOT and verify it doesn't stumble/hesitate.

$16k is a bit high IMO. I paid $13,500 for an '06 V6 Pony with 9,630 miles with a LOT of upgrades in mint condition from a Ford dealer in April '09.

Damn Nuke, some freakin deal you got ha. Alright guys appreciate the help. I got a pic with the VIN # on it, should I buy a carfax or should I expect one from him? He doesn't have one right now.

For $16k from a private party, I'd insist that he provide the CarFax.

The water leak is easily fixable but you don't want damage really if it was already an issue that hadn't been fixed...
