I've seen other vehicles that put the name of the song that is playing even when on local radio.
Does this set up have that ability?

Yes, the shaker 500 is capable of doing so. I set it up on my shaker 500. Although I honestly forgot how to do it, I do remember it being extremely simple. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
Hold down 'Menu' for about 3 seconds. That will take you to a secondary menu. Turn RDS on. Then set your (limited) display preferences for it from within that menu.

Mine would work sporadically and when it felt like it.

Isn't that described in the OM? My g/f has the Shaker in her '06 Pony set up for text when on the radio and I believe the '07 Shakers have a bit more capabilities.

Note that you must be in radio mode to access that option. You won't get it if you're listening to a CD.
