Default Help - battery going dead

Thanks in advance for any and all help....

My wife drives a 2006 Mustang v6. It is equiped with the factory shaker 500 stereo system. Recently we have been having problems with the battery going dead. I put an amp meter in line with the negative terminal and battery cable and started pulling fuses. I have a 1.5 - 1.8 amp draw with everything turned off and all doors closed. When I pull the stereo fuse in the engine compartment the draw goes away. I know the stereo draws a small amount of power to hold presets and such, but 1.5 amps seem way too high. Any sugestions????

yes, 1.5 amps is excessive. Did you have the battery load tested? Does the shaker have an amp or pre amp? Does the system sound normal while powered? Have you changed the pulley size on the alternator?

Yes battery was load tested and was fine. Alternator was checked and was fine. Battery and alternator were replaced in january of 09. how much draw should the radio have when not turned on. Radio sounds fine when fuse is in. It is shaker 500 so it has additional amplifier that is on different fuse. Pulling amplifier fuse does not affect the draw.

I've noticed alot of people mention turning their radio off manually when before turning their car off (pushing the volume button), maybe this has something to do with it? I never had a problem like this with my Shaker.

The '05's and '06's are prone to high parasitic current draw if the Shaker is left on when you shut off the ignition. The amp continues to draw power. This is a very common issue and the high percentage of garbage OE Motorcrap batteries simply compounds the problem. Read the TSB's regarding batteries and alternators and you'll begin to get the picture. I'd have both the battery and alternator load tested just to be sure you don't have another issue.
