Default Auto vs manual?

I'm on my second GT over the years and they've both been stick shift. All my other muscle cars and sports cars have been stick shift. The only vehicles I have ever driven auto are my trucks (including my former LIghtning, of course )..

I am looking to purchase an 07 or 08, possibly , GT, there is one 'vert but it is Auto.. On the street there is NO QUESTION that stick is more fun!! I don't get traffic jam on my daily commute, so stick is ok, BUT, I have entertained auto.

I am wondering how much slower is an auto vs stick on a street race ie, on the highway, from a roll, etc?

How about normal driving and you step on it?

Are the shift points crisp, high on the rpm range?

Comparable cars and drivers, which would be quicker the auto or stick?

I know for quarter mile consistency auto is the way to go, but I really never hit the track, so that is irrelevant.

Thanks

EDIT... I did have two muscle cars that were AUTO and that was my former Grand National, but it had a shift kit and it was awsome.. it would chirp second gear when you stepped on it.. Also my former 2000-2001 Pontiac Formuila and it also chirped second gear, but both these cars were longggg time ago and don't really recall.

well considering that i have had both auto and stick in my 06 gt, i would say the stock auto is slow compared to the manual. But if you get the auto custom tuned then its a whole different story and just comes down to driving preference. In stock form the auto wont chirp the tires shifting gears, but if you get it tuned it will chirp 2nd and 3rd.

the only way to go is a test drive... see how it downshifts from 40, 60, 80 mph, thats prolly your best bet

Stock auto, not so much. Get it tuned and hold on!

Just tune the auto as others have said and it'll be pretty much even in terms of performance. I'm looking forward to tuning my auto

In the MM&FF mag, SCT wrote a tune specifically for the '11 GT Auto. In completely stock form and 3.15 rear end, they got high 12's just with the SCT tune.

With a tuned auto, you give up very little in straigh-line runs. With a little throttle practice, dropping 1 or 2 gears at roll-on is easy and quick. Backroad's/roadcourse is another story...standards rule baby! Other than the downshift to 3rd, which works well, you don't have much to work with.
Getting it tuned is the key. I love my brenspeed tuned auto!

Brenspeed auto tune is quite nice. Chirps second and third everytime at WOT. I have 4.10 gears too, so its really snappy around town.

I love my auto, especially with the 4.10s, re-tune and CAI.. but I miss driving an 5 speed many times.
