Security System

Security System
I walked out to the parking lot today and noticed that on the drivers side window was the outline of where someone pressed their face against the glass to look inside...not cool....which led me to decide that my stock security system, which really isnt a security system at all needs to be upgraded.....so anybody have any suggestions on a good system that wont break my bank?

I put a Viper on mine with the convertible proximity sensors. Get too close and it starts chirping. Stay too close and it goes off. Tilt sensors to prevent anyone borrowing the wheels...think it ran about 300 bucks installed at one of the big electronics retailers. Upgrading in a bit to include remote start for another 80 bucks or so.
I just got the base budget model and added sensor packs to it, seemed to be a cheaper way to get what I needed without any extras I don't.

Almost forgot....try and get a proximity sensor that is not Viper. I got one that's made by a different manufacturer, that's the only weak link in the Viper. The off brand one is less "twitchy"...and wired right up no problem.

OK guys, please allow me to clear up some issues you have about the OEM alarm on the car. The term "factory alarm" years ago was an oxymoron for me. OEM systems were cheap, and had little to no sensors at all, much less provide any serious protection for your car. This, of course, has changed.
The optional security package on the S197 is far superior to previous renditions found in older mustangs and other Ford vehicles. You have many different detection methods you only found in higher end aftermarket systems.
What you have
1. Dual motion sensors, one pointed at each door, found in the overhead light housing.
2. Hood pin switch
3. Trunk pin switch
4. Tilt sensor - discovered this while jacking up my car
5. PATS ignition anti-theft system - better than the classic relay starter interrupt system
6. Secondary horn in the trunk for security system - also sounds primary horn at the same time.
What you don't have
1. Starter interrupt relay circuit (that I'm aware of) - the Ford PATS system takes care of that problem. No need for the added interrupt
2. No glass break or shock sensor - Who cares? You have dual motion sensors, and you don't have to worry about false alarms from thunder, stereo systems, etc.
3. I don't believe the parking lights flash when alarm is activated - need to test for this, as I never have.
The only real reason to add an aftermarket alarm is IF:
1. You don't have the added security package.
2. You want remote start capability, which IMO I would simply add an aftermarket remote start ONLY module to the OEM security package. The only disadvantage of this - the OEM remote doesn't have the range as a high end aftermarket remote start security system, but my OEM remote works far enough for me, hence my opinion to add remote start module only.
Autopage has universal sensors that are hands down better than Viper. I know exactly what you mean.
On the other hand, I'm not fond of external proximity sensors (i.e dual zone - internal/external proximity). Changes in ambient temperature affects their range and unless calibrated perfect (I use this word loosely) can false alarm or chirp for no reason. If you insist on proximity, use single zone "interior only" sensors. My point is, an alarm is made to protect what's inside the vehicle and the theft of said vehicle only, not to keep people from touching your pride and joy. So many have made the mistake to install sensors to detect people standing too close only to get tired of all the false chirping. IMO, don't waste your money and stick with what works.

Yeah I bought the car used and unfortunately it didnt have the security package. I looked up the viper ones and there is quite a few different systems. Vapor, which one is it that you have? Hows it working for you?

I think those sensors you were talking about are only in the convertibles. None in mine.

It's working good, I have to wait until the parking lights go out to activate it, but that's just the way the installer hooked it up. I'm assuming it won't be difficult to change if I need to. The motion detector chirps the alarm if you're right up against the car...looking in the window does it every time. It doesn't seem to chirp when people walk by it...so I don't know if it's turned way down or only activates when motion stops. Good money spent in all though.
