Default Right Size Tire for 10" Rim

First, I want to say sorry if this question has been asked so many times, I searched but I couldn't find an answer to my question. This week I'm planning on going out and buying some new rear ties, but I'm trying to find out what size would be best for my 20" with a 10" width rims. Right now I have 275/35s that the first owner put on the car, but I'm looking to upgrade to 285/30s. Would that be too big for my rim, or fit alright? Thanks for the help.

Go to the tirerack website and look and some sampling of tire specs to see what fits a 10" wide wheel. Also, google any of the tire size calculators to help figure out impacts due to going from an OE tire size to a new size. I'd give you a link but I don't have them on my work computer.

Why do you want to go to a shorter tire? I would think that a 285/35/20 would fit with no problems.

When I see someone wanting to run a series 30 I want to say "Just ride on the rim". No sidewall looks like chit, but that's just MY opinion.

285/30-20 is about half an inch shorter than the OE tire sizes. 285/35 is about half an inch bigger. Proper wheel offset will matter more with the 285/35 for fender/sheetmetal clearance reasons. A 10" wide wheel will work with either.

Alright I'm kind of confused here, I thought the second number was the ratio size, so in essence you really wouldn't see a difference going between a 35 and a 30, considering that the tread width is getting bigger. As far as I know there isn't a 285/35, so with my size rims I have to get the 30 to get the 285 width. I may be wrong on this though.

275/35-20 . . . 27.6" tall and about 10.8" wide at the sidewall when mounted on a 9.5" wide rim, 11" wide on a 10". Tread width is about 9.1". Sidewall height to the bead is about 3.8", visible part of the sidewall about 3.2", compressed under the car weight maybe about 2.5" or 2.6".

285/30-20 . . . 26.7" tall and about 11.2" wide at the sidewall when mounted on a 10" wide rim. Tread width is about 9.4". Sidewall height to the bead is about 3.4", visible part of the sidewall about 2.7", compressed under the car weight maybe about 2.2".

I'm sure that you'd see the difference. Being 10mm wider is not enough wider to make up for 5 points less profile. Rough numbers, you'd have to go at least to a 315/30 to match a 275/35's sidewall height.

As far as I know there isn't a 285/35, so with my size rims I have to get the 30 to get the 285 width. I may be wrong on this though.

How are you? All those tire sizes will look good on a 10 inch wheel. We install 295/30/20 Toyo Proxes 4 on 10 inch wheels all the time. The 295 is 26.9 inch in diameter and 11.7 inches wide. Looks great!

Alright, thanks a ton for the info guy. I'm just going to stick with my 285/30's then, as any 285/35's are way more than I want to spend. Going to get some Sumitomo HTR Z III's. Thanks again.
