Default 3.73 gear installation problems

I recently bought a 2011 5.0 with 3.73 gears and figured an upgrade to 3.73 would be ideal. My mechanic has installed the ford racing gears and is having a heck of a time eliminating the whine from the gears, has anyone experienced any of these problem? any advice would be helpful.

Bought it with 3.73s and upgraded to 3.73s? I hope its a typo. Also what kind of mechanic is he? A local repair shop, or ford specialty performance shop?

+1 sounds like someone is having trouble getting them perfect so they won't whine!

Whine comes from incorrect installation/balancing. Whatever you want to call it.

to my knowledge, once the wear pattern sets in after a few miles of driving it is impossible to loose the whine on that set of gears, you have to install a new set. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

No, I have heard this before. Once a bad install is driven for a few hundred miles the wear pattern starts to wear into the gears.

+1

What I have been told as well.

Gear whine is not uncommon. If this installer is having issues, you may want to find someone else more accomplished.

From I've learned about gears and gear whine, the whining comes from the gears being shimmed improperly. Once they start whining there's a good chance that a pattern has been worn into the gears and they'll need to be replaced.

If they are Ford Racing brand gears you can retain the original pinion and carrier shims and it will be to spec. I did my own and the install went perfect. More than likely the pinion bearing preload is not correct.

How much of a difference did you notice going from 3.31s to 3.73s?
