bye bye motor
If using conventional oil at a quicky change the 3K oci is a good measure. Its possible that sludge built up over time if she was changing a conventional oil every 8k miles. Once oil additive packages are consumed sludge forms quicker than most people think.
Hopefully she does now after seeing (and paying for) the damage first hand.
This is the reason i'll change my oil every 5K with mobil 1 5w30 and a motorcraft FL820S Filter. Some might say it's overkill, but I promise my engine will never look like that inside.
Maybe the place claimed that they changed the oil, but never actually did?

I have been chided for changing my synthetic oil every 5K miles also. But when I took the valve cover off my wife's '90 Miata with 100K miles to replace the timing belt, the inside of the head looked like a new dime. Her '08 Miata and my '06 Mustang GT get Pennzoil Ultra every 5K miles. Oil is cheaper than metal.
