Converting Manual Seat to Power Seat on 2008 S197???
I have a 2008 Convertible with the manually adjustable seat but want
to convert to the power seat. Has anyone done it? The 2008 has
the side air bags. I do have a power seat from a 2005. The power
seats are a really nice feature.
UPDATE: I tackled the project today. The electrical connector (grey) is there
so all one has to do is unplug the connector before removing the manual
seat and plug in the connectors when installing the power seat (or vice
versa). The two bigger pin connections are for the power seat, the three
smaller ones for the seat belt warning light I believe. The separate yellow
connector is for the air bags. There is no need to do any rewiring, just plug
in the connectors. My case involved swapping the seat backs from the 2008
with the manual seat to the 2005 with the power seat so that I could retain the
air bag, the seat back is disconnected by removing 4 bolts, the seat back adjuster
does not have to be disconnected. I will end up with the side air bags from the
2008.
My advice would be to swap the whole seat so one does not have to mess with
changing the seat back as then it's just a matter of 4 bolts (15mm & 13mm) and
unplugging/plugging the electrical connections. The power seat is heavier.

If you do pull this mod off, do post. I just want to see if it can be done.
But in reality, I'm with 157dB on this: set it and forget it. Even in cars with power seats I drive, I set it once and never ever mess with it again.

I don't see what would be so hard. If you have the complete seat with motor and track then all you need to do is remove your manual seat, dig under the carpet find the harness for the power seat option and plug the power seat in.

I dont know about the 05-08 S197, but I know for sure the '11 base and premium trims both come with seat side air bags. If the 08 base model cloth seat does not come with side seat air bag, then you will have to do some wiring and modding to get it to work. Otherwise, it would be rather straight forward (just unplug the old airbag and plug in the new one for the power seat).

i dont get what the fuss it? I set the seat the first time i drove the car and dont mess with it. The only time it moves is to let people into the back and with the manual seat it is much quicker then the automatic. You have to sit there with your finger on the button as it slowly creeps up, rather then grab and slide... makes no sense

The passenger manual seat doesn't have any height adjustment, so that's one thing that would be gaining. I just had the entire interior of my car out last weekend (for sound deadening mat), and my 2008 has a power driver seat and manual passenger seat, the electrical connectors on the two seats are different. I suspect the power is there for a power seat, but the passenger seat has a few other things going on such as the weight detector that senses a child weight and turns off the passenger (front) side airbag. I should have looked at the undersides of the seats a bit better when I had them out, but no joy.
