Default Warming Up

Guys

Wonder if i could trouble you for opinions on warming up the car on a cold morning. Currently my process is, start car and drive off, but keep revs to 2K or under until the temp gauge is at normal operating temperature.

I am not sure if the 07 GT has a CAT as standard, but i have heard that if you have a CAT you shouldnt let your car idle for warming up.

I have also been advised (from my motorbiking days) not to let the rev counter climb to far on a cold engine, let the engine warm up a bit, hence my 2K rev limit until warm.

What do others do?

Thanks Graeme

That is basically what I do also. I think the warm up period is overrated.

A little cuddling before driving her... oh, you're talking about a car, sorry.

Good question. It doesn't get all that cold here in Vegas, but I let it idle for a minute or two then go easy on the RPM while on my 5-mile approach to the highway. By then, it's up to temp and good for my 29-mile commute.

but what is actually *good* for the car, I have no idea, so I'll be back to read the posts by experts on such matters

I warm mine up before I hit the road. I read somewhere that the lubricant in the supercharger is thinner than the oil, not really sure if warming the engines helps this any, but it can't hurt.

165,000 miles on my 04V6 with no problems. Still doesn't burn any oil so I don't see where I have hurt anything.

I let mine warm up for about 10 minutes in the morning before I drive it, mostly because the weather's been in the teens lately and the windchill factor puts it subzero. The leather interior definitly has less of a "cool factor" in winter, haha.

I leave my car in first gear overnight to avoid the e-brake from sticking, so I just put it in nuetral, pull the e-brake acouple clicks, let it run for about 10 minutes while I'm inside the house grabbing some last minute things, and then drive. Engine still wont be up to normal temperature, so I don't get on it for a few miles.

In the morning i will let the car sit at idle for about 1 minute then drive away. I keep the revs under 2k until warm. Sometimes i let the car warm up for 5-10 minutes, but thats more for the comfort of me.

Getting the car going as soon as possible after start is preferred, cause all moving parts, engine and drive-train, get to warm up.

Start it and drive off. The only reason I see to let it idle is to warm or cool the interior but even then, it happens faster if under way. This is just an opinion as I doubt anyone has done any controlled testing to prove things one way or another. And that is also just an opinion too.....
