This is easy, look at the right hand side of your auto shifter and you will see a small flat metal button that sits flush with the silver part or the shifter. Depress that button and the shifter will move out of park and into what ever gear you want. You can see it in this pic

The OE battery is garbage and often can take the alternator with it and vice versa. Hopefully all will go well with a jump start and new battery install.

Thanks so much guys, I didn't need to disengage the lock in the end. We got the van into the garage with like an inch on both sides between the side and the other car, it was so perfect. I wish I had pictures. Then we took the cable and it was JUST long enough, and I mean JUST like a few more centimeters and it wouldn't have done it.

We boosted it and backed it out, now we're just running it so it charges up a bit.

By the way, nice ride Cutter Wolf.

Seems like it would have been easy to remove the battery from the van and take it to the Mustang and jump it.........

Thanks, just remember next time to push that silver tab/button down and you will be able to shift it out of park.

FYI : Just running the engine, even for an hour or 2 or 3, will NOT properly charge the battery. The alternator will help maintain thae battery but you need to put it on a charger overnight to see if it can accept a full charge. A partially charged wet-cell battery that's already aged and having issues will only degrade that much faster.

Consider getting yourself a set of 30 foot jumper cables, with no smaller than 2 gauge wire. The voltage drop is approximately the same as 16 foot cables with 4 gauge wire.
