At my local cash converters there is a SCT X3 SF3 tuner for sale for 79.99 they said i can try it on my car before i buy it. I read that if these used tuners arent unlocked from the original cars that they are useless paper weights. Is it worth it to buy a used tuner for $79.99? It doesnt have the white cord to go with it which i am assuming is for the computer. Is it true i can buy into the tunes for life program for $150.00? Please forgive me for my ignorance, but i am just excited but at the same time worried because ive learned to many times in the past if it's too good to be true, it probably is. Also i am only 19 and this would be a huge cost savings to me if it would realistically worked out. So any insight on this would be highly appreciated, anything i learn tonight will help me decide whether or not to buy it.
Thank you,
Haydn.
This is exactly what it looks like.

They aren't completely useless, first make sure it's for a your car, if it is then locked there is always the option of sending it to sct to unlock, which if I recall runs around 150.00. So in the end with the free tunes thats another 150.00. So that would put you at 380.00 and for that price it would be a better option to buy new.
Yes, for that price though it is more then likely locked... If not thats a hell of a deal.
I know it's bad to keep my hopes up, but the people there said that it was a piece of junk and recommended some other handheld device that was only a diagnostic that read codes and errors, i dont think they know what it really is. So from what i have read online i just plug it in my car and it should power on scroll all the way down and see if it says locked/married or unlocked/unmarried. I hope it's the latter.
Was the other device priced higher than the tuner? That would be my only guess as to why they would recommend something else...
And, if it's too good to be true, it probably is......
It was a little higher, i think they thought this was generic brand engine diagnostic reader, thats what the price tag said on it. I told them it was a flash tuner. So an employee took it to my car and we tried it out, its locked with three unlocks left for three other vehicles. I told him im not interested for 79.99 and he said he could do $30.00 for it. I ended up buying it, you cant really go wrong with $30.00. I dont know if i am going to end up selling it or paying the $300.00 for the SCT unlock and BAMA tunes for life program. So total it would be $330.00 and i think AM has them on sale for $379.99 right now so i would still save some money, but would almost feel more comfortable with a brand new one..
