Default Help ! Fail-safe mode when engine is cool

Just purchased a 2005 GT with only 16,000 miles, everything checks out. Coolant right on full mark. Used the car about 3 times , and now , with the engine cool ( not overheating ) , the 'Fail-safe' mode kicks in and every other cylinder fires. Cannot use the car in this manner - what should I look for ???
