Why do people turn traction control off for racing?
I have a 2012 GT stick shift, I know it has the both the electronic traction control and i think a stability control. I read from the manual when you're stuck in mud or snow it's good to turn it off but why when you're racing? Is it to drift or what? If I turn it off will the car feel faster? Also, how do you turn both the stability control and traction control off. Do you hold the traction control button or just press it once?
Yes, one may wish to slide the car around a bit to better negotiate the corners on the race track (those here that actually get to race can give you a much better answer than I). Furthermore, many purists consider such drivers aids to be not very sporting. Kinda like flappy-paddle gear shifters.

but I believe you hold down the button for x amount of seconds to turn both systems all the way off. I'm sure 2010-12 guys will chime in on that.
Press the traction control button once to disable it, then press & hold again for 7 seconds to disable advance track. I like it when I commute & its wet, otherwise I turn it off. I also believe having both enabled all the time can cause premature wear on the rear brake pads.
You also have to keep your foot on the brake pedal when holding it down for 7 seconds, and you have to be at a stop. Racing you are often at the edge of traction and may lose traction momentarily. At that point, you don't want the electrical nannies kicking in, cutting power, hitting the brakes when you don't want them to. And yes, it will also wear your rear brake pads as the system is trying to straighten you out if you get a little side motion.
The traction control limits wheel spin by cutting off fuel flow. Thats a bad idea when your flooring it with a supercharger spinning up. You will lean out and most likely do some damage with trac ctrl on. N/A cars will still have problems but the main thing is when so spin the tires a bit instead of going like you need to be, your car starts off nice and slowly
Yeah, I agree. Basically traction control slows you down, but helps novice drivers stay in control in everyday/wet situations. Drivers that know what they're doing don't need help staying in control... and they certainly don't like computers interfering with their driving. (why I don't like the Nissan GTR, etc.)

If your a novice than leave all on. Once you get experience and a good feel for you car and a good understanding of road course racing than switch them off and take control. As far as street driving, why shut off safety feature that may save you azz. You never know what you will encounter drive todays roads.
