Default Ford Racing Tune

Haven't posted in a while but I got a new Ford Racing 90mm cold air intake (same as the Shelby GT) and tuner off of ebay for $175. Submitted my voucher for the tuner and got it the next day. The first month no problems. Then the pinging started. Below is a copy of the email I sent to Ford Racing after I spoke with them on the phone back on June 24th. I called on the 5th of July as was told they were still waiting to hear from the Tune specialist. Still no word from them. Any thoughts Thanks

I live in a Hi alt ( 2500 ft) Hi heat area. So California Hi desert. Up to 115 degree temperatures during the summer and very low humidity.
91 octane highest available.

Driven 500 miles since tune installed. Octane sensor is on. Lots of pinging with it off.

During cooler temps. 65-70 deg. No pinging heard at any time

Mod temp. 70 to 85/90 range No pinging under normal driving heard. When running the car. 2 or 3 short pings right after shift.

Now higher temps are here 100 ish the last couple of days. Pinging heard right after almost every shift. even when driving it very easy. Stronger and longer duration during spirited driving.

how do you turn the octane sensor off?

sounds like you need a retune. maybe running lean. idk how they are going to retune without a datalog.
what if you return to stock?

One reason not to go with the FRPP tune: (lack of) customer service. The 2nd reason is the additional 5-10 RWHP you'd see with a good custom tune from Bama or Brenspeed.

I concur with onederful that you're running lean but since it you say it was fine the first month I'll ask if the temps were equivalent to what they are with the pinging. If so, then what else changed? I'd even try another brand of fuel. And if I recall, the FRPP tune requires higher octane; 93 or thereabouts.

That is one of the few options on the Ford racing tuner.

I think that is by far the best bet. but so far I can't get any help from the folks at FRPP

what if you return to stock?

Went back to stock last night. No problems this morning but it was early and still cool.

Nuke, I would agree on the customer service so far. I think a Bama tune is in my very near future.
I not sure if you saw the copy of the email I sent FRPP. It was below My OP. But it is all heat related. The temp. started climbing and the knocken a'started. The FRPP tune requires 91 but suggest 93 if it is available. We only have 91 here in So Cal. I have tried several different companies. So far Shell is better than the any others I tried.

Thanks!

At this point, I'd retard the timing a tad. But for the long term, can the FRPP tune and tuner and upgrade to an SCT from AM or Brenspeed.

I think you are right on both counts.

That is what I did for my 91 P AM tune. Started fine in April May but June I started pinging. Retarded Global Timing by 1 degree and 2000-4000 and 4000-8000 timing by an additonal 2 degrees each, problem solved. I can hammer it all day long ZERO ping and my butt dyno doesn't show any difference in power.

At 115F with low humidty like there is here in AZ it is not farfetched.

Does the Ford Procal tool allow you to change anything?

No Not the timing. Only the gear ratio and I can turn the octane senor on and off. . I've been trying to get the guy at FRPP to send me a new tune. But The tune specialist has been on vacation, traveling, etc. BLAH BLAH BLAH. I am heading for the squeaky wheel gets the grease attack plan. It's been almost a month since I first called them.
I'm hoping to get the green light from my CEO to order an SCT from AM and end the misery.

eww..sorry to hear about the lack of timing control. Well at least you can order just the SCT from AM or Brenspeed and still get lifetime tunes for free.

I picked up the Bullitt Style FRPP intake and SCT from AM because of the reputation. I had read about the Ford Procal tool and did not like the fact you couldn't do much with it except for send it to Ford every time you had a mod installed that required a tune. Not even e-mail tunes...

Just take the wife to her favorite lunch/dinner place and let her know you made an 'oops and need to fix it' Should be enough to convince her.
