Default problems putting into reverse

Hay guys!

Doesnt happen all the time but when im at a complete stop and want to put in reverse it sometimes wont allow me like if something was blocking it . Just want to know is this is a issue! ( Manual tranny)

When car is cold gears are rough up shifting 1 threw 3 after car is warm no problem

When that happens, shift the stick into the position of one of the forward gears (other than 5) then try again to go into R. Sometimes you can also go back into neutral and let the clutch out, then try to go into R again. This is not anything "wrong" with the car...

Many also complain about the cold-shifting issue. I have only ever had even a tiny bit of that when it is REALLY cold outside and the car has been sitting outside overnight.

Yup, both normal. For the reverse issue, I usually put it in neutral then clutch out and back in and go into a forward gear then back, IF just going into a forward gear didn't manage to allow me to do it.

If that doesn't work I put into a forward gear, slip the clutch to move a few inches, then it goes right in. Never had to do anything beyond that.

I believe the manual says fourth gear, I had this problem but putting it in fourth first made the problem go bye bye

Reverse can be difficult to engage in any manual transmission. Common accepted practice is... well, anything mentioned above. Putting it in 1st or 4th first is the most widely used cure.

Good info. This was happening to me too. Gets a little frustrating when someone is waiting for you to reverse so the can go by.

+1 to the above. Also, you may want to consider full synthetic for the tranny. It may not totally resolve some of the issues but in some cases it seems to help.

I agree.
every time I start my mustang I have gotten into habit of throwing it in first on my way to reverse to avoid the occasional 'woops it didnt go into reverse'

This has been a common occurance for just about every manual transmission car for years. The above responses is all you have to do.

I recently swapped out my trans fluid for Redline MTL and - among other things - one thing I've noticed is that it's much easier to engage reverse.
