Default drag racing the automatic questions

Hey guys I'm new to this whole having a car that doesn't suck thing. I had a few questions. When racing the automatic I know to shutoff overdrive. What is the purpose of the 1 2 3 gears? For maximum time should I shift. 1 2 3 D ? On another note does it hurt anything using the 1 2 3? Sometimes I use it to hear my engine rev up a bit without going fast. Plus its fun

Any information is appriceated

With the auto you put it in drive, traction control off, o/d off, then floor it, go straight and win the race. No need to shift, you cannot shift faster than the computer.

The stock shifter is really a piece of crap IMO. Shifting it manually is sketchy at best. If you would like to shift manually while daily driving get a tci Rachet shifter. Does it hurt the trans? I have read yes and no, all depends on how much your bearing on it.

^^ what he said. With a tune you shouldn't need to manually shift it, plus the downshifts are bad for the trans according to the guy who rebuilt mine.

You should also look into a higher stall torque converter

I haven't bought a tuner becuase I was thinking of jumping into fi. What's a torque converter cost roughly and what would it cost to install. Should I change anything else at the same ?u

With a STOCK auto (no tune) , you most certainly can shift faster (and at a better RPM) than the tranny.

You're heavily modified so you may have forgotten what a slug the OEM programming is from the factory. Stock form there is a delay from gear to gear as the computer lets off the throttle, shifts, then reengages the throttle. Manual shifting an auto with the stock tune decreases this delay but it's still there.

If you have an aftermarket AM or Brenspeed tune, then it's best to let the car shift on its own as you've described because the "softness" of the shifting is greatly reduced and the gears just bang through like they should.

P.S. I wouldn't recommend shifting manually all the time either. It's harder on the tranny pump and the clutch bands.

I got my torque convertor from brenspeed and it's a TCI. U will find not many here liking them but brenspeed uses these on there race applications and have many customers that like them including myself. 500 bucks for the part and I believe another 400 for install by brenspeed

Whatexactly does the high stall torque converr do. Sorry for my ignorance. Gotta learn sometime. I'm guessing it has something to do with shifting points

So when ur getting ready to launch u can get ur cars Rpms up to around 3000 without spinning and then when ur car is going through the gears it will keep the tranny shifting in a better power band. It's unbelievable the difference.

It allows you to rev the motor to a higher rpm just before you launch at the drag strip. Its not needed for daily driving.
