Preparing to Race
Yeah, as others have said, forced induction, built motor, and some good tires should get you there.
Not to offend anyone, but I always feel like nitrous is cheap power. It's not always there; instead it's a button. That's why I like superchargers and turbos.

OP - I do agree with everyone else who's saying there's ways of getting there but as soon as you do, here's someone with a faster car. Nothing wrong with the pursuit of HP but you've got to be willing to pony up a lot of cash and by the time you're done, what's to say the GTO guy hasnt upgraded something and now has more power? It's a fun but expensive pursuit of HP, so keep that in mind. First things first...supercharger. If that doesnt work, smaller pulley on your SC. If that doesnt work, start looking at cams/internals/etc/suspension/tires...etc...
I'm going to finish my exhaust first my catback should be here sometime next week then ill order my lts i know there is always i faster car one of our friends has a twin turbo 03 cobra that runs low 9s so i dont think i can catch him anytime soon but i bought the car to make it faster so thats what im going to do
Kind of a lame reason to buy a 5.0 imho. Enjoy the car. Even if its not as fast as a highly modified GTO
Everyone has their reasons for driving what they do. If he want's to spend hard earned money building an unbeatable Mustang, more power to ya. Just make sure it's on a track where no one else could be involved if it doesn't go as planned. Personally I bought mine for the joy of crusing around in a good looking car with the windows down and the stereo playing! The power is an extra added bonus
I say DO IT!!! Just do it at the track! I vote for the Twin Turbo set up that is in testing. EASY 600+ hp, more efficient than S/C and more of a 'cool' factor IMHO. Toss on a little 75 shot of spray for 'just in case', and whoop some butt.
