- does the gauge go to hot/overheat?
- as asked before does the fan come on assuming the gauge shows very hot eventually?
- heater getting warm?
- i wouldn't drive it, just let it run, check and observe.
mine warms up within a short time.
when cold/thermostat closed, radiator hoses should NOT be hot, maybe a little warm.
the gauge should go up (motor warms up) somewhat above center.
then thermotat should open, radiator hoses heating up, gauge go back a little and somewhat stay.
if so thermostat should be ok, but at 88k its a good idea to replace it anyways.
at some point then (keep an eye on the gauge) the fan should kick in, especially when not driving = no airflow.

* I didn't notice if it did or not. The guage does not go all the way to hot. It goes right to the middle.

that does sound like circulation issues, hence thermostat.

Head gasket? I had same thing happen to my car a couple years ago (still under warranty at that time) - never showed an overheating, but would blow the coolant out around the reservoir. Didn't show up in the oil either.

Are head gaskets in issue on V6's? Have a V8 myself but always like learning new things.
I'd replace the t-stat first and make sure all air is purged from the system. Or just take it to the dealer and get it checked.

It could possibly be the upper or lower thermostat housing, which is made out of plastic. I've read it's a common thing with the 05/06 models. Many others have experienced this issue. Mine leaks off and on, which is very little.

Is this about the cost of what something like this runs with parts and labor?

Well we took it to a shop that was close to our house because the closest Ford is about 15 miles and that is way too far to drive with coolant issues... They looked it over and determined there was a crack in the thermostat housing. They are going to fix it for about $600.
