9R3Z-14D212-A Sync kit and hands free
I just ordered this kit (which I got for $60 brand new!). Anyone ever install this kit? I was told it will work with my 2008 non-nav system with the shaker 500. I only care about integrating my cell phone (hands free) into my radio system. The other stuff it does I can do without. So, would a dealer still need to program it after I did the install?
Any input would be great.. Thanks |
Subscribing! I have always wanted the hands free option in my '08. Please post back when you get it installed...

$60 new!!?!?!? How did you pull that off? lol

The instructions that I saw online stated it was for a 2009 Mustang. Where did you see that it will work on a 2008?
Installation Note: The Ford Sync system for the 2008-2009 Mustang will only work with non-navigation radios. There are reports that the Sync system will work on a 2008 Job 2 Mustang and newer with the Navigation system, but voice recognition will not be supported for Sync features, bluetooth phone support is still functional as is manual operation of digital media devices such as iPod, Zune, USB Flash Drives, and other supported mp3 players. |
^^What he said.. There are web sites and other postings on the internet that states the same thing. 2008 will work as long as its not the NAV system.

slickman - what is the build date of your car? I would like to know if you get this working with your OEM radio...
|
From what I can see it is including a wiring harness and that has all the adapters to completely replace the existing harness. What I don't know is all the specific modules that it is including and their purposes. I can see why it is saying "non-nav" though because this wiring harness probably isn't designed for it as it's a preconfigured all in one plug and play. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
A few tips though if you're having trouble go through the how-to guides and find the ones installing navigation units. It'll show you how to access/undo everything. Also, I'm pretty sure the motors dealing with the Climate control knobs, or atleast the doors for switching from AC/Defrost/etc are back there, so be sure not to stuff everything in there. Keep us posted, thanks! Good find if it works! |

Dang, got me all excited until I saw the non-nav part. I have some aftermarket unit that the PO installed in mine and I hate it.

From what I have found, there are two model numbers that were used in 2008 for the shaker 500 radios. One is the early version 8R3T-18C815-GB which will have the button with the phone on it that states "mute". Also it will mute the radio. The sync unit will not work on this radio.
The other radio is model# 8R3T-18C815-GD which also has the button with the phone on it but does NOT say mute (it will display no phone when pressed, not mute the radio). These will work with the sync kit listed in this post. I'll be verifying this as my sync unit will be here tomorrow. |
I have the early 2008 radio as it mutes the audio (and displays mute) when I press the phone button. I kind of figured that I had an early '08 as I have the old 2-piece spark plug heads. :(
Oh well, guess I will have to get a Pioneer 4400 with Bluetooth! LOL |

Oh well, guess I will have to get a Pioneer 4400 with Bluetooth! LOL Or you can buy a new OEM head unit for $149 which I think is the cheeper way to go. http://www.ebay.com/itm/170798321613...84.m1423.l2649 |
Got an '09 and just hit the "buy it now" button. I'm a bit skeptical though seeing that this kit is 400+ elsewhere. But hell, its only 60 bucks. How wrong could it be?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-STOCK-FA...item4cffa0a47c According to the install instructions here: http://www.partscheap.com/v/vspfiles...nc_6-18-08.pdf you need to belong to some "PTS Application" to be able to program the Sync unit. Are you betting on it coming pre-loaded with the current software? I was going to give my local Ford dealership a call to see how much they'll rape, I mean take from to do the work. |

I was reading throught the install instructions last night, before I passed out, and I'm curious what you plan to do for the programming?

I think that's only if you plan on using the Sync service. If your only going to use the hands free, there is no programing setup I believe. |

I'm still going to call Ford for SnG's to see what they charge. Im no stranger to manual labor and those instructions are well put together so that should be pretty easy. |

Yeah, worst case is they need to program it. My only concern is I have a custom tune. Not sure I trust these monkeys. :icon_hide: |

Although, the Sync programming shouldn't have anything to do with the engine... right? None the less, I agree. Can't trust'em! |

Me too... Didn't think about that... Crap!

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. I just bought one.
|
I'm sure that there will be a cost for the programming at the dealer...

I called my local Ford dealer and they said they source that work out to a local dude. So I called said local dude and he gave me a price of $600 installed $400 for the kit $200 labor... and then he tried to sell me a Kenwood DDX719. I'll give him a call once I get the kit and everything status quo and go from there. The great news is I can call him to program whatever it is that needs programming and not go through the dealership. |
Well, its all installed, took me 4 hours. The instructions say to mount the control unit in the kick panel on the pass side. But, I felt it was way too tight so, I mounted it on top of the radio. All went well but, it still needs to be setup by the dealer. Going to call them tomorrow and find out the process.

Does the radio still function normally without the programming? It might be cheaper to call around to your local radio shops to see if they can do the programming. I posted earlier that my local dealer outsources that work to a local dude. |
yes. the radio works just like it always has.
|
W00t! Installed today and working like a champ. Still need to have it programmed to use the remote and some other Sync related stuff. $40 on Monday will take care of that. Dig in guys, this is legit!

Its easier to tell you whats not working working. Basically its the remote and the voice activated stuff. I can make and receive calls without issue. I can scroll through my phone book, missed calls, last made calls, redial, etc etc...

It should prompt you to Download your phone book. |

Try hitting the OK button through all the prompts. It should give you the pairing number. Add that to your phone and you then hit the OK button again
It should prompt you to Download your phone book. Yeah, I got to that point finally. I put the pin number in my droidx but, my phone wont sync for some reason. The radio does see it because at some point it shows "DROIDX SAVED". But my phone will not connect. It see the SYNC in the radio but wont connect. I used the book that come with the SYNC to setup the pairing. |
Hmm, did you hit the OK button again after your phone connected? I ran into that issue. the phone said it was paired but not connected. (I think that's what it was). Had to go back delete it, then start again. You should hear the Sync voice say the phone has been connected in the end.
All in all, great catch on the sync system and thanks for posting. I'm sure i'll post back sometime Monday afternoon after my Sync is fully programmed. |
Does the USB work without it being programmed?
