Yeah, you hit your brakes and show him that your brake lights are clearly visible in the daytime and the tinting causes no legal obstruction to your car.

Unless they can prove that the tinit it past a certain point they can't do anything. Call them on their stupid crap, guy sounds like he was just having a bad day and wanted to write someone a ticket.

Find out what the acceptable lumen rating of taillights is, have your tailights measured, and have a copy of the print-out.

That'd be the only legal way around it that I can imagine...

I'm reading that he uses covers and doesn't have tinted tails. The covers block too much light making them illegal. A film/tint will allow more light to go through depending on how dark you want it. I don't know NC's law on lights though.

I am a cop in New Orleans...I can't comment on NC laws but in Louisiana its not that the lights are tinted but that the light be visible at a certain distance away. I believe Louisiana is something like 100 or 300 feet away for tail/ brake lights. Not 100% sure on the distances as I'm not a traffic cop and could actually care less about tinted tail lights. I have yet to see even a traffic cop carry a 100-300 foot tape measure in their unit.

In Alabama I believe it's 200 feet. I have sprayed tinted tails which are visible by more than 200 feet.

Here it is around 500 feet, I believe. Pretty far.

Any rating on lumens or even % of tint is a moot point, because 99.99999% chance the ordinance in question isn't worded that way. It IS entirely possible though, that the ordinance the cop was referring to restricts tail light covers of any type completely though. You have to know the ordinance before you know if you have a defense or not, and you obviously don't. Even most small towns have ordinances listed online, look it up.
