Question P061 and issues

Hi Everyone,

I have searched the forums on the P061 code and have found a few people who have had it but so far not what exactly caused it or what fixed it.

I have a 06 V6 with 150k miles on it; just recently it started running real bad. With the tune it was stumbling and had to work at keeping it running. I did get a code off it one time with the tune but it only had four digits instead of the usual five it was "P061" tried looking it up but it wasn't listed.

I returned it to stock and put the stock air cleaner on it and idles fine and is good to about 4k rpm (without load) and then starts sputtering and wont go over 4k rpm, I am not sure if it is a rev limiter engaging while it is in neutral (it acts like a rev limiter). I took it to the dealer and they said it was the MAF, replaced it and it runs a lil better on the stock tune (though I haven't driven it more than 2 miles on the stock tune since replacing the MAF) but still runs like crap with the aftermarket tune. In the stock form when I am get going it is very very sluggish to a certain rpm (sorry I didn't notice what it was) then it starts running like normal. Also while it is in the stock setting I haven’t had any DTC's come up it has just gone into limp mode (double sided wrench).

With the after market tune I am only running a JLT CAI and am using a VMP Tune. I have had the tune since 2009 with no problem up until now.

Things I have done to it...

8 months ago plugs and wires were changed, 1 month ago new battery, fuel filter. 2 weeks ago MAF sensor. I cleaned the throttle body after it happened. The only other thing I can think to add is that a day before the problem started I installed a new stereo but I can't see that causing any issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated its been about a month since I been able to enjoy my car.

UPDATE: I drove the car for about 20 miles with the stock tune on it, other than it being very sluggish to about 3k RPM's it ran ok, just need to figure out what is causeing it to be sluggish. It is a 5 sp manual and I couldn't even get it to break the tires loose so that you have an idea of what the performance is.

Sure you wrote down the right full DTC?

I'd try cleaning out the TB again first.

yeah, like I said I know its usually a 5 digit code but thats all that came up when I plugged the SCT into it.

How does it idle? What did you use to clean your TB?

With the stock tune it idles fine, with the aftermarket tune it idles like crap. I used a carb/fuel injrctor cleaner with the little plastic hose as well as a rag to get the tougher stuff.

Typical, the tunes will exacerbate most powertrain issues. Don't suppose you've tried datalogging, looking for misfires, fuel pressure, etc.. Perhaps, flashing the tune back, then pulling the negative terminal to reset the KAM, then let it learn again. Ideling a few minutes without A/C, then for a few with it on max. Should there not be any other hardware issue, I'd suspect the TPS(Throttle Position Sensor) from the description of idling, sluggishness, and with tune the higher rpm issue.

I am doing what you suggested, pulling the Negative terminal. I am doing it with the stock tune.

as far as Data logging, even though I know my tuner can do it I am not really sure how to do it or how long it takes, do I do it while it is sitting ideling or while I am driving or both?

I also noticed that when I rev the enging up a bit it is slow at returning to idle. Also when I contacted my tuner he said it was the throttle body, he didn't specify if it was the unit as a whole, the TPS or the TB motor.

my question is if it is somthing to do with the TB would would that also cause the extremely different running characteristics between the factory tune and the VMP tune?

Thanks for your suggestions and help

In most cases as I understand it, yes. An after-market tune is pushing things further, timing, spark, etc.. To the point where it might seem close to fine with the stock tune, but as soon as you put a tune on it..

A prime example is the TB. Mine, and many others get a tune well into a few thousand on the car already, everything works fine, put in aftermarket tune, idling issues show up, then go away once you clean out the TB thoroughly.

I'd hit up Autozone, swap out the TPS sensor for a re-furb one of theirs. Fairly cheap. See if that does it. I have yet to hear of the main portion(motor) of our TB failing this early on. Possible, but not likely. The links posted will walk you through a technical diagnosis, but were it me, I'd probably just throw a TPS sensor at it first, since I think they will still accept it back for a refund should it not be the issue.
