Different weight distribution or way more than 400 HP would suggest more rear tire.

Otherwise it's still a "sell the appearance, sell the car" thing. Which it seems is easier than selling on technical merit.

You can't rotate them, but the good news is you'll only be buying 2 new tires at a time

All I know is 255's look narrow as hell on this car. What's a V8 without a nice aggressive stance? Your not going to notice much difference with square/staggered unless your ripping apexes on public roads which shouldn't be happening anyways.

Look at this picture and tell me what front and rear tire sizes you think you're looking at.

About "stance" - the more I hear that word, whether it's here, on some GM car forum, or a Pro-Touring site, the more it sounds like people are modifying their cars to fit somebody else's preference in appearance.

My problem with the 255 and what made me go stagger was the diameter filling the rear fender well. Up front the 255/45 is fine, but 27" diameter tires just don't cut it out back on the s197, so I uped the ante to 28" and have been very pleased with the look and additional grip the 295's provide.
Staggered pro = nice aggressive stance

Those do look nice mayo. So they are 255/18s in front and 295/18s rear? Lowered at all?

Are those 255s all around? Hard to tell the fronts. 18 or 19?

I haven't noticed any understeer problems with 255 front 285 rear w/full suspension minus sways. Handling is very neutral and the grip is unbelievable. The back end still comes out of you want it to.. just mash the throttle in a tight corner and swing it around.

I get crazy understeer with my stock wheels on though.. 235's all around (probably just because the tires are awful). I wouldn't let any any talk of understeer deter you unless you use the car for serious tracking. The look is absolutely unbeatable and straight line traction is massively improved.

Only negative I've noticed is the front tires wearing out long before the rears due to front camber and not being able to rotate.

18" all around. Here's a different view that may help you firm up your thoughts about width.
