Default Update on engine

So finally today the engine is being opened up. So far the damage is a messed up head. He is now opening up the rest so see what else he can find.

How much do you guys think an oem head would cost me?

head is damaged and the block is broken. Engine needs to be replaced, Where can i find a used engine for a good price. Also what do you guys think about a 5.0 swap how much more is it going to cost me to do.

Hmmm, where are you located in CA?
4.6L blocks are becoming hard to come by, the 5L Boss block is compatible with the 3v heads, going with the coyote 5.0 is going to prohibitive since I think you will also have to get a new ecu/wiring harness. The 5.4L block is also compatible with our heads and is still being produced... I haven't heard of anyone doing a 5.4 swap to 3-valve though, but it should be straightforward other than possibly requiring extra hood clearance possibly and the intake manifold from an expedition or navigator, plus it would probably need slight exhaust work to connect to your cats.

mechanic wants to charge me 4000 for a used engine with under 50k miles and installation. Do you guys think this is a fair price?

Installed? If so, then maybe. Most of the used engines on ebay have 70-90k miles and go for less than $2k.

A new 5.0 long block is $6k, plus another $1500 for ecm and wiring harness. I think it will bolt up to the 3650 as well, but don't quote me on any of this. When in doubt, google it!

Well you can get a brand new motor that's hand assembled by ford racing for 4700obo. I'd expect a used one with 40k miles be be half that or less. So $2350 for the motor and $1650 to pull old and install new. It's not a bad price.

What about your old motor? Surely there are still some good parts on it. I guarantee they will make money of it if you don't.

if there is nothing wrong with the replacement engine, then i think $4000 installed is a reasonable price.
