Default PROBLEM- paint peeling

So about a month ago I noticed my paint was peeling in the crack between my rear window and my left rear quarter panel. Not sure if it's due to sun damage, or soap, or water, or what. I'm at the body shop and they recommend painting the entire panel for about $600, or just painting in the fold of the body, which may not solve the problem;and the paint could keep peeling on. Any suggestions? Anyone had this problem before? Thanks. It kills me to have to consider fixing something so small at such a high price.

I'm pretty sure my 06 coupe was doing the same.

I just didn't get around to fixing it, so I'm as clueless as you. I would assume its worn because all the water/dirt/soap from the top and glass drains through that channel.

Its a common problem with our cars, especially if they are not kept inside a garage. Go to your local large dealership and just look at all the S197s in the parking lot, chances are most of them will show signs of the same sun damage. As far as I know that has been the only location of major paint peeling (in the gap b/w the glass and body panel).

I thought about putting some kind of rubber between there kinda like the rubber stip you use when putting in screen on a door or patio... just gotta find one large enough...

For sure, I'm probably gonna (don't kill me) plastidip it. I used it on my rims and my pillars between my fogs and headlights, and it came out great. It seems like it will do the job protecting in there; when i use water on my plastidipped items, it just seems to dry off in seconds; it doesn't absorb any water or anything. I'm gonna do some masking later and get it done. I can't afford to take it to the body shop for such a little repair. the plastidip will do a similar job that the rubber/plastic molding will do. I'll keep you updated.

Love DYI fixes. I noticed that I have something similar on my '11 where the roof line meet the frame. No peeling yet but I know its going to be a problem in the future.

It actually looks good with the Plastidip in there. My DD V6 is not garage kept and I haven't had this problem on mine.

heres the finished product. I used 4 coats of plastidip, the masking tape peeled off nicely, and i used a little touch up here and there on the parts that were over the edge. hopefully it doesn't get any further; but for now, the gap is protected from the sun and water damage. i decided to do it on both sides as the other was beginning to show signs of flake.

Thumbs up

I've noticed the same issue on my car;
rubber weather stripping is not a bad idea, but this is a very clever quick fix.

Thanks for sharing!
