Default Spark Plug question

I have heard that ford had problems with the spark plugs breaking off when trying to change them and I also heard they fixed the problem but I didnt know what year it was fixed. I want to put better plugs in my 07 gt. Does anyone know if this was a problem on 07? Thank You!

They fixed it mid way though 07.

If your coil boots are black, you have the old plugs.

If they are brown, you have the new-style plugs.

This has been covered, many many many many times.

Yeah check the color of the coils. Also it's worth having the Lisle tool ready just in case. Search my profile for my thread on doing it for some tips that might help.

As far as a better plug, there are many threads in the Mustang & F-150 forums on issues with aftermarket plugs not as reliable as stock ones. I found that overall the OEM ones work perfect. Some have had great success with aftermarket so it's your call. Once you break the originals out and change them using the TSB, you can break them loose every so often and check them with zero breakage. Just stay on top of it regularly and they won't become stuck to the head.

Wrong info. The updated heads (plugs and coils) are found on 2008 Mustangs built after Oct/Nov 2007. I have an 08 with a build date of August 07 and still have the crappy 2-piece design. None of the 2007 model year cars will have the revised setup. Some 08 do (after Oct/Nov 2011) and all 2009 and 2010 do.

Personally, i replaced the two piece design at 10K miles with the Champion one piece (PN 7989) and have never looked back.

My car now has 53K miles on (43K on the Champions) with ZERO problems. I took out a few of them once at 20K and again at 30K to inspect them. Nothing unusual. I'll probably replace them when I hit 70K (at 60K miles for the plug).

Eh ok. Whoopdie do. There is so much crap that changed between 05 and 09 i get the years mixed up in relation to the issue. Regardless, the coil covers tell all, so that info was right.

In regards to what to swap them with, its up to you OP. I've explained it before, but the issue with the plugs isn't that they are a 2 piece design. Does it help? No, but that's not the main reason they had problems.

I paid $60 for a set of the updated Motorcraft ones, and they work great. Have had them out a few times since, and 0 issues.

AA on valve cover = old style plugs, AB new style. Mine was an 08 with AA. Black boots is correct with the 2 pc style. Soak with deep creep overnight. Mine all came out(yea!), but I only have 16k for miles. will sell with nickel anti-sieze reasonable.

I just changed mine about 2 weeks ago, I have 57K on my 08. Just loosen the plug about a 1/8-1/4 turn, spray some penetrating oil down on the spark plug. I used SeaFoam Carbon Cleaner, didn't break any plugs. There were 2-3 that I had to let soak overnight, but if you use the 1/8-1/4 turn loose, 1/8-1/4 turn tighten and back and forth you shouldn't have an issue. If it feels tight and starts to bind up, spray a little more down there and go onto another plug, don't rush it leave it alone.

Just did mine two weeks ago, following the Ford TSB to the letter. No problems (although a couple were a little dicey, but didn't break), but it's very time consuming with the 1/4 turn tighten, 1/2 turn loosen procedure.

Don't spray too much carbon cleaner in the hole, or you could hydrolock your engine.
