Default preowned bama tuner???

I know somebody who wants to sell his bama tuner. It came from 2011 mustang. I have 2013.
What needs to be done in order for it to work on my car? Is the tuner locked?

Thank you for all the info

The tuner will be "locked" unless he returned his car to stock - if his car still has a tune installed from that tuner, it will be married to that car. For it to work on your car, you'll need to get a set of tunes from Bama or your tuner of choice written for your car (assuming it isn't locked). If it is locked, you'd have to send it in to SCT and have them unlock it, and then get the tunes for your car.

If it is locked, I wouldn't bother buying it. The cost to 'unlock' a tuner is somewhere around $150 IIRC + another $150 for tunes for life from AM. If the cost of the tuner is 125-150 + 150 +150 = 425-450 you may as well buy a new one directly from AM that already includes tunes for your car.

The tunes from someone elses car will NOT work on your car unless your PCM code is identical.

+1 on ensuring it's unlocked.

Then you'll need to order custom tunes. The tunes for his '11 will not work on your '13 unless they're canned tunes from the handheld manufacturer (but you said BAMA so it likely has HIS custom tunes for HIS '11).

Thank you for your responses. I guess its just easier to bet a new one and not to have to deal with all that headache.

No way! Unlocking the tuner is simple. You just need to make sure that it has been done. It is well worth the savings to verify, then all you need is $150 for new tunes and you're set.

Its easy to check if its been unlocked. Plug it into your ECM port and it will ask if you want to lock in the new VIN once it realizes its not the same VIN. Its really no pain at all. Then you have the cost of the new tunes, but it is still cheaper.

You can definitely use this device. However, Derf makes a great point! The cost to unlock a tuner is $150 and only SCT can do it. After you get the device back and it's unlocked, there's a one time fee of $150 to buy into our free tunes for life program. Once these steps are completed, you'll be good to go and able to use the device! If the device is locked, you're probably looking at $450 said and done, compared to $379.99 to just purchase the device brand new with custom tunes already loaded for your specific Mustang.

However, if the device is already unlocked you could get into that device for $150 less. Look into the device options and see if it's locked or unlocked and we'll go from there! Whatever is easier for you, just let us know and we'll gladly help you out.

Hey Dan, how much for me to move mine to my other mustang? I'm guessing it's 150? I sold that car last year so my tuner has been collecting dust in the back of the snake since then.
