So I bought my car new & one of the first mods I ever did was get a Hurst shifter for it. Specifically, this one:

I've had the car now for almost 6 years & it has been a good product. I have noticed though that the 2nd to 3rd shift has become somewhat loose.... Maybe it is starting to show wear?? Has this happened to anyone?

So I will probably be switching it out here in the near future & I was was looking at this product from Barton Industries.

Any feedback from anyone that has the Barton shifter?? Any other shifter recommendations??

 

MGW, hands down the best shifter ever made.

 

There's nothing in the shifter itself that's likely to show any wear as it's basically just a stick through a larger ball in a large socket.
The gates are determined by the transmission's internals which also have stops.
The only likely place for wear in the shifter outside of the transmission is the little bushing at the bottom of the stick under the floor ... and that's a Ford part. It is the bushing you swapped off the OEM shifter when you installed the Hurst.

 

If you do switch out your shifter, you really need to consider MGW. Absolutely the best.

Is it possible you didn't use locktite on the nuts when you installed it? I remember getting that specific advice. I'm coming up on 90K miles and haven't had any issues.

 

I'm pretty sure I did, but I did that install back in Feb of 08 when I got the car, so at this point I really don't remember.?

 

Might be a quick fix to take the boot off and feel around. If the whole thing is loose I can see a 2-3 shift wobble some.

 

Step 1: Buy an MGW.
