On my 2010 mustang I'm having a problem with the trunk release. When I hit the button the motor makes a grinding sound for a few seconds instead of just the click sound. Has anyone had this problem, and have a solution. I don't want to get fleeced by the dealer if I can help it.

I believe it's a solenoid. I'd try to hit it with some lube or perhaps it's just an adjustment. Have you looked at it?

 

Noting looks out of place. However I'm not that mechanically inclined. I'll try some WD 40, and see if that helps.

IF WD40 does help, then follow that up with a real lubricant. WD40 is a better solvent than lube.

 

When my wife's Focus did that it turned out to be a misalignment of the trunk latch. Adjusted it and never happened again.

So I have a similar (or maybe the same) problem. I have an '05 GT Mustang that every now and then makes a "ratchet" sound. As stated by someone it's the electric solenoid that is actuating repeatedly because the trunk lid won't open (initially at least). Could be my imagination, but hot days tend to be worse. I checked the springs on my trunk lid that push the lid open an inch or so. They felt springy so I don't think they are the problem. From what I've read elsewhere the '10 model has a different way to push the lid open an inch.

In my case it looks like maybe a misalignment has been damaging the latch mechanism slowly over time, or perhaps the device was poorly designed. It almost looks like a washer needs to be placed on the latch axel to move the latch further away from the housing as you can see in the picture that the latch is being etched by the housing.

My solution has been to apply, "Valvoline: Ford-Lincoln-Mercury, Moly Fortified Multi-purpose grease" to the inside of the housing between the latch and the housing. If anyone has better lubricant idea, please let us know. Anyway, it really doesn't take any tools to do the job. I used a flathead screw driver, grease, and a zip tie to apply the grease. Oh and a towel. Don't forget to bring a towel. Pictures should give an idea of what I did.

Since this has been an intermittent problem and it being 1 hour since I worked on it I can't say it is a sure fix yet but I'm gettin' good vibes.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I now its been a while since this post originated. Got an '07 that does this - its sounds like a continuous ratcheting noise for up to 3 seconds - very loud. Getting ready to sell the girl so have to get this little thing fixed. Cheers, Shawn
