Hey all,

I was wondering is there a way to determine what gears I have without opening up my diff? I was on the freeway yesterday at 60 MPH and was at 2000 RPM. Anyone care to guess what I have in there.

I'd like to have 373's as I think they offer the best drivability and get up and go.

After adding a CAI, Tune, full off road exhaust I was thinking gears would be the next logical choice. Thoughts?

 

it would normally have a sticker on the differential cover that says the gears, mine said 3.55.

If you going to do gears, go for the 4:10s, its a whole different beast

 

How to figure out your rear gears...

1) chock front wheels

2) set car in neutral, set e-brake (can't hurt)

3) jack up rear so that your rear wheels are off the ground

4) make a mark on your rear tire and a mark on the ground. Match these marks up

5)make a mark on your driveshaft and a mark where the driveshaft connects to the differential that doesn't spin. Match these marks up

6) spin your tire 1 revolution. Count how many times your driveshaft spins.

Example. DS spins a little over 4, then it's 4.10
DS spins about 3 1/2 then it's 3.55.
DS spins about 3 1/3 then it's 3.31
Simple.

I would get 4.10 if I were u. They rock

 

Thanks for the response guys. My worry on 4.10 gears is I will lose my drivability on the freeway. In my area the freeway is a must.

There's a little sticker on your diff cover that will tell you the gears.

 

You can also go to http://www.paladinmicro.com/pmicro.php go to calculators click on how fast each gear, enter your transmission and tire size. Go 50 mph in 4th gear and note the RPM. Then check this calculator and if everything is set right and accurate and your tires are the size you say etc , then it will be accurate with whatever gear ratio you have.

 

I had 4.10's in my 05 for 1 year and then reinstalled the 3.55's. On the highway mileage dropped and it always felt like I needed a 6th gear. I myself would go 3.73's for 60mph and 3.55's for 70mph cruise. The 4'10's also had way too much torque multiplication for stock 235/55ZR/17 tires.

 

You don't have to climb under or locate your window stick to determine your rear ratio. Open the drivers door and look at the door jamb sticker under axle and the code will tell you what your car has from the factory

BB - 3.73 ratio
CC - 2.73 ratio
DD - 3.55 ratio
GG - 3.31 ratio
YY - 3.15 ratio


This is how I found mine.

 

They aren't bad at all. It's like, 2500 RPM @ 70-75 mph or something like that. Most 4 cyl cars turn higher that that at those speeds. I drove to Utah from Texas and the only thing that got old was the constant exhaust note. No more downshifting to pass is a huge plus. 4.10s are worth it. Get better tires and learn not to dump the clutch in 1st and 2nd and you'll be just fine.

 

I have 4:10's - just went on my first 'road trip' and put about 175 miles on her today. I tore a$$ no problem through the winds, hills and grades - great power on demand in every gear - but definitely could have used a 6th gear on the long stretches. Mileage sucked too but I owned the damn road! 4:10's are a lot of fun but not ideal for a road trip.
