My steering rack was replaced yesterday (30K Miles), a few weeks ago it started making terrible gear noise when turning the wheel. It has been getting progressively worse to the point the wheel would not return to center, so I took it in. I was surprised they turned it around in one day, locating the part and getting in, it is a pretty big job. It was great service and it is completely quite now. All covered under my extended warranty.

I was initially worried it was the strut tower mounts, I personally installed the new struts and the mount came apart and spilled the bearings out, on both of them! I carefully cleaned and put the bearings back in packing them generously with grease. Thankfully they are still working fine. I know I should replace them soon anyway.

I know these electric steering racks are pretty new, I hope this one lasts longer...

 

It should have lasted much longer than that.
