Hey guys,

My steering wheel has started to vibrate back and forth at certain speeds and I want to know if I should expect alignment issues, tie rods, or wheel/tire balancing issues.

The car seems to be good until at 50ish MPH when the wheel starts to shake, peaking around 60MPH, slowing dissipating until gone as I reach about 70ish.

Any ideas?

I'd suspect balance first. How many miles on the car and those tires?

 

Car has 110k miles, but the current wheels and tires are only about 1 year old and are a summer set only.

 

i would start by balancing, at that time they can check for runout, i would try to take them to a shop that can balance for road force as well, it requires a high end balancer, and not every shop has one.

 

yep, sounds like an out-of-balance tire.

 

Well, today I experienced some extra agitating than normal, accompanied by a sound. When I got home today, I jacked up the drivers side front wheel and shook the wheel/tire. The wheel/tire shift when pushing and pulling on the sides of the tire. So I know at least one of the tie rods are bad, inner I think.

I will talk to a dealer tomorrow and we will see what comes of it.

 

Ball joint (control arms) are notoriously weak on the 05-08 models. 09+ use the GT-500 arms from the factory so they are more solid.

I had similar issues with my car when the arms went bad, especially around wide sweeping turns (not corners) that I could briskly increase my speed from 40 to 50-60 mph+ The tire felt like it was bouncing.

Discount balanced the tires (but said the weights didn't move) Rims were true, tie rods were good, strut mounts were new, sway bar links and bar bushings were new...nothing, until I replaced the arms. Joint on the drivers side was as floppy as a gay guy in an all lesbian **** and the bushings on the horizontal mounts of both arms were cracked all the way through.

Replaced them and rock solid now...

 

That does sound a lot like what I am experiencing. I will look them over when I get the car up to replace the tie rods. Thanks for the heads up.

 

Just take it to an alignment and let them take care of it .

 

I replaced the tie rods and it definitely fixed the well shake. Either that or it was the fact that the Ford Dealership balanced my wheels wrong and each wheel was between 0.5 - 1.5 ounce out of balance.

But while I was under the car I discovered I have to replace the ball joint in my control arm. I have some questions about the repair. I started a new thread here:
