*Help* Noise above 25mph

Please view video:
https://youtu.be/d6CNZ9qCWxU
Car: 05 mustang GT
Noise starts at 25mph and does not go away. Sounds like a helicopter chasing me in the car. No vibration, just noise.

Parts replaced after noise started:
Driveshaft
Axle Bearings
Rear gears
Rear Diff Unit + bearing kit
Brake pads/Rotors

anyone with experience have a clue??

Sounds like a bad front hub/bearing assembly, possibly a tire.

Mach1BBFun 07-10-2016 08:30 PM

Have put 1 new hub on the right front but not the left. Reason I have ruled that out is because it sounds like it's coming from the rear.

All 4 tires are new as well

+ front wheels have no play

+ had bad wheel bearings before in front of other cars. You can't hear this reflecting off curbs/other cars like I could when I've had bad wheel bearings in the past

Mach1BBFun 07-13-2016 08:31 PM

Any ideas?

Eleanorspeedster 07-13-2016 09:49 PM

probably need to hear the sound

Coosawjack 07-14-2016 06:43 AM

A Wump.....Wump.....Wump sound that increases in frequency with increased speed is normally a rear wheel bearing and axle!!

FORD 8.8" rears are famous for it...especially the right side ones!! :(

Mach1BBFun 07-14-2016 11:03 AM

It does the above. Replaced axle bearings but not axles. Honestly believe it could be an axle shaft?

Coosawjack 07-14-2016 11:26 AM

1 Attachment(s)
You should always replace both since the bearing runs on the axle surface and in time wears a groove in the axle...see photo!!

I tried to find a photo of my '04 Marauder axles at 177K miles.....had about a 1/8 inch groove where the bearing runs......Wump.....Wump.....Wump....BAD!!:icon_cry :

Good Luck!!

Not that I don't trust the above, but anyone else have ideas before I go drop $400 on axles?

Does a 2002 gt have an 8.8 rear?

bl817 07-23-2016 02:23 PM

yes it does, the housings and mounts have changed over the years but since the intro of the 79' foxbody, all internals are pretty much the same, from the 7.5 to the 8.8 which are not interchangeable. i could be completely wrong on this of course but pretty sure all the GT cars have same rear diff as of late. good luck

JimC 07-23-2016 08:35 PM

All Mustangs 2011-14 model year have the 8.8. The 2005-10 GT's have the 8.8 and the V6 had the 7.5.

Earlier years some had 7.5 and some 8.8 - I don't know for sure how it breaks down on the pre-S197 platform.

Of course with the IRS in the 2015+ the rear end is different and the gears from earlier models don't fit I understand..

Update!!!!

The whomp whomp whomp, whoop whoop whoop, or helicopter noise is gone!

Noise in rear axle fixed by new axle shafts and axle bearings. ~3hrs work, would be 1.5 but getting abs rings off is a pain in the ass

Coosawjack 08-07-2016 04:06 AM

Glad you got it fixed and it wasn't too bad yet!!:icon_toast:
