Question Maintenance Services

2014 GT, I always get hit with recommended services at the dealer, wondering when people normally have services other than oil done (Spark Plugs, Transmission Flush, Coolant Flush, Fuel System Cleaning, anything else...). Mine currently has about 54K miles on it and I don't really drive it hard.

It's not just about how hard you drive the car, it's also about time. Matter of fact the worse thing you can do to a car is not drive it. The recommended services are there for a reason and I for one follow them, many of which are simple DYI projects.

Yes, I know it's not about how hard you drive the car. I was only giving history of the car and how I drive, hence the year and miles. I'm tried to get non-dealer recommendations. If I were to have listened to my dealer, I would have been flushing transmissions fluid, coolant flush and fuel system every 10K miles which is absurd. Yes, they offered it at 10K, 20K, etc... hence why I've ignore them. But considering it's 6 years old and over 50K miles, I figure I probably should be doing something by now other than oil and brakes.

Anyways, before I drop $400-500 bucks I wanted to get some input.

I would do the transmission flush and the coolant flush. If you use a good quality gasoline, I wouldn't do the fuel system cleaning B.S. The sparkplugs should still be good for a while longer. Don't go to a quickie lube place, they wont do anything but charge you $$$ for doing nothing

Brake fluid flush would be a good idea also as well as what David suggested.

I also have a 14GT, mine has 38,xxx on it. I’ve already done plugs, rear diff, brake/clutch flush, and your basic oil changes. I was told to do the diff and trans every 30k. I only changed plugs due to the mods on the car.

Brake fluid, coolant and transmission (if you're an automatic), rear diff would't be bad a idea either.

Brake fluid is about every 2-3 years, it's hygroscopic so it will absorb water over time.
Transmission fluid ever 36K. it is NOT lifetime unless you want your trans to last the life of the fluid which will significantly less vs the life of the transmission (hardware) doing the flushes at 36K intervals.
Coolant for a new car is 5yrs/60-75KK, after that 3yrs/36K. I would not go 100K before the first change. By that time you'll already have irreversible corrosion in the system.

None of those systems are 100% hermetically sealed (they all vent to atmosphere) which means water and other outdoor contaminants can and do get in. These contaminants acidify the lubricants and oxidize the anti-corrosion agents over time. The vast majority of OEM manual recommended service intervals (most exclude brake fluid oddly enough) are based on LAB conditions, not real world conditions which will dramatically reduce the life expectancy of said fluids.

Fuel system cleanings are snake oil these days. Unless you go stupid cheap or live in a third world country, the fuels these days have a lot of detergent in them to keep the system clean.

Just checked the fine print in the maintenance schedule, and while it says change engine coolant at 100K, the fine print actually says 6 years or 100K miles, then every 3 years or 30K miles, so looks like this one would definitely be due within the next month. I bought mine on February 2014.

Transmission Fluid says 150K miles, no mention of years like the coolant. So if people are saying, 36K, 50K, etc... why such a huge different from what Ford has in the schedule maintenance? I do see further down it gives examples of driving conditions which lowers this to 50K-60K (towing, extensive idling/low speed driving for long distances, operating in dusty/sandy conditions).

It's to boost sales. 10,000 miles or 1 per year oil changes. Life time fluid in the transmission. It's all sales B.S. Ford or any other car producer don't want their cars last more than 7 years and around 80,000 miles. They want you to buy a new one. If you buy a new car every 6 or 7 years I wouldn't worry about changing anything but the motor oil.

I must add: I had my transmission fluid (automatic v6) flushed at 20,000 miles at my local Ford dealer. They dropped the pan to change the screen filter and clean off the magnet that sits in the pan. I got to look at the very fine metal that was on the magnet. They cleaned the pan and magnet, put in a new screen filter then put the pan back on. The service adviser told me since the 'break in' wear has been done for the transmission, the next time they will only have to flush the fluid and 'not' drop the pan for a filter change. I only drive my Mustang less than 2,000 miles per year but plan on keeping it for a long time.
