2014 hood issues
So I just bought this car and didn’t notice the paint issue in a couple areas that are bubbling up on the hood - I think I read of this being a aluminum & paint problem on S197 Mustang. Am I correct?
Has anyone found that once the bubble has started that it only gets so big and doesn’t get any larger- in other words if I make this car a garage queen the area that has a bubble won’t get any worse as long as I keep the car out of the rain or moisture.
Assuming the 2014s have an aluminum hood (like the 05-09s), then I have some bad news for you:
)
- That bubbling will spread over time
- Ford isn't going to/won't cover it. If I recall/heard, the corrosion/rust warranty requires a pencil-size hole through the metal. Since the hood is aluminum, it's not going to rust, at least not rust through like that. It just isn't going to hold the paint.
- If you do some searches on this forum and the internet, it's a mixed bag in terms of re-painting these hoods. Probably you can get lucky and get a shop that really knows what they are doing and it might be fine. However aluminum is apparently really tough to prep properly. Likely a new paint job will last for a few years and then you'll start to see bubbles in the same places.
- There are a few theories floating around as to what the issue is, but I think the most popular one is that some impurities were introduced/left in the aluminum during prep, specifically weld locations, places where machines "grab" the part, etc. Basically cursed from the factory.
