Default Wheel and Tire weight

I figured it makes more sense to talk about it here rather then in the Exhaust Weight thread where I was posting before.

I noticed tirerack list an Avanti Racing BC Denaro that is only 20.7 lbs
Offset: 42mm
Backspacing: 6.14"
Bolt Pattern: 5-114
Rec. Tire Size:255/45-18
Weight: 20.7lbs.
$174

Enkei Emola
18x8
$159 (each)
Offset: +40mm
Backspacing: 5.98"
Bolt Pattern: 5-114
Rec. Tire Size:255/45-18
Weight: 21.4lbs.

Enkei Razor
18x8
$176 (each)
Offset: +40mm
Backspacing: 6.06"
Bolt Pattern: 5-114
Rec. Tire Size:255/45-18
Weight: 21.2lbs.

Enkei Tuning Fujin
18x8
$225 (each)
Offset: 40mm
Backspacing: 6.02"
Bolt Pattern: 5-114
Rec. Tire Size:255/45-18
Weight: 18.9lbs.

Motegi and Sparco had some light weight contenders as well, it funny to go through and see how heavy some rims are,, I think they get up to 46lbs for an 18" rim,, what the hell? You must need some big brakes so you don't keep rolling through the stop light
Most of the performance tires for 18" (255/45-18) rims seemed to weigh from 28-31lbs

the other thread had the stock tire and rim weight at 55-57,4 lbs, so 18.9 + 28 = 46.9, so you can easily shave 9-10 lbs off each corner.

I really wouldn't have minded staying with 17s if I could have found wider rims. I ended up with 19s because I wanted 10" wide in the rear.

@Hogasswild
You got a good point as far as staying with the 17s, I noticed when I was looking at the wheels on line that the 17s are usually lighter weight and less expensive. I guess once you decide your probably not going to put bigger brakes on and you don't really care if your tires are 10" wide there is a some incentive to stay with 17s.

It looks like those Conti DWS are available in a 225/45-17 and a 225/50-17 and they are not that expensive.
"W" rated, and 21 lbs each. (225/45ZR17) ($125), i can see why people are talking about them. The 225/50-17 are 1 pound heavier and about $5 a tire more..

The Motegi MR125 17" is only 16.4 lbs,, 16.4+21 lbs = 37.4 lbs,
I am not sure if any one posted a weight for the 17" stock rims and tires, but I would imagine there is a significant weight savings.

I noticed you have have a Boss 302 Strut brace, is that made from an aluminum alloy? It looks like it is in the photos, I was wondering if it was lighter weight then the steel strut braces?

I think it's aluminum. It felt pretty light. The boss strut brace shares the same part number as the performance package strut brace.

Those are very good weight savings which is originally what I was going for. I think my fronts weigh 59lbs and my rears weigh 62lbs. The DWS will help reduce weight for me.

I was thinking about it and I think someone like me is going to be happier staying with the 17" rims. I am probably not going to put bigger brakes on, I probably have enough tread on the ground for the driving I will do and I will be happy to spend less on tires and save on the weight. Beside if I wanted to get lighter wheels I don't have to fork out the cash for wheels and tires at the same time, I can buy some rims now and tires when I need them or the other way around. The savings is around $58 a tire when it comes to the Conti DWS and around $20-$25 per wheel or more.

If you stick with 17s I would recommend 235/55-17s. They are a little shorter than your energy saver tires, but about the same size as the stock 18s. That particular size offers more aggressive tread patterns that will give you better grip off the line and in the corners. The DWS in that size are 24lbs. PP size tires are the shortest at 27", but s197s usually go as short as 26.7".

Shorter tires will kind of accentuate your gears, but I think the 225s are going to be too short for you. Check out http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp to do comparisons.

Thanks for the Tip, makes sense,
I guess that kind of points things back to looking for a good balance between Tire a Wheel weight. I suppose there is a chance that moving up to a an 18" rim might save some weight or at least brake even and give a more desirable side wall ratio and wider tread... hmmm

The Motegi MR125 17 x 7.5 is only 16.4 LBS ($173) and the Conti DWS 235/55-17 is 24lbs ($162), that is only
40.4lbs that is pretty light weight set up.

The Motegi SP10 18 x 8 is 19lbs ($179) and the Conti DWS 255/25-18 is 28 lbs ($188)
47 lbs

I noticed tire rack has some sparco wheels on blow out, 18x8s are $139 (20.2lbs) that is smoken deal
I get to brag a little bit to day, I spanked a GT this morning, it looked to be a 2009 or so. I think he had an auto trans and probably wasn't very experienced, but I beat him twice with ease. I thought he would have killed me at the start but we were already rolling at 30-40 mph and we only had 1/4-1/2 mile for each run. I only hit it hard enough to stay out in front of him and I still had plenty to go. I don;t think I got over 5500 RPM.

I saw this front brake kit and I start to suspect that you can to bigger front brakes and not add weight and not spend a zillion $$..
