351 Headers
okay, this question may be dumb, but I am wanting to put headers on my car that has a 351W. I am not sure what year the 351W is. Does the year matter when buying headers for a 351W? My car is a 1969, but I think it may have an engine from between 1969 - 1970's.
Hi,
What car is your motor in? Any header built for small block fords will bolt up. However, at least 1-5/8" primary tubes are advisable for the larger displacement of a 351w.
I'm using the BBK 351/fox body swap headers in my 'stang, and I love them! I'm glad I went with the chrome though, cause I met a guy running the ceramics on his Windsor, and the coating has started to peel. IMO the chromey's look cool slightly blued up.
But the car you motor is in will be an important determining factor here for sure. Gotta make sure they're going to clear things like steering, shock towers etc...

my car is a 1969 Ford Torino GT fastback... I didnt want to say what the car is since this is a mustang website... but atleast it is a Ford, and really the the 1968 and 1969 fastback body style does resemble a mustang only larger. I was thinking about the Hooker Super Comp long tubes from Summit. They are fairly cheap, and are the only headers I could find that will fit a torino with an automatic on the column.
I do have ceramic coated headers in my 1989 mustang and they have held up well, but I have only had them three years... But I cant afford a set of ceramics for my torino.
Thanks guys.

TORINO!!! One of my FAVORITES. I miss my '76. Now a '69 GT Fastback is wayyyyy underrated. I guess the only clearance issues you's have to deal with is around the transmission.
I had Blackjacks on Torino with automatic and 351W. I don't know what part number as my Dad headed up that project a long time ago.
The only thing I can suggest further I guess is make sure they are a header with equal length long tubes. Budget and fitment providing.
Good luck on that AWSOME ride.

I am about 90% complete on doing Hookers Supercomps 1 3/4 LTs on my Tbird. These were not for this car. so a lot of extra work required to clear the shock towers, motor mounts and Kmember. The one thing that was required with them, that would be required on most 351s, is clearancing the head sub flanges and header mounts to clear the head bolts. I have the APR bolts, so they may be a little larger causing some of the problem. As far as performance goes, I am sure these are amoung the best on the market. They are a real PITA to mount to the head. The 1 5/8 would not need the sub plates, so would be a lot easier. I had tried BBK 1 3/4 before, and they were a breeze to install, but will not clear an AOD.
Here is my install so far, which shows the sub plates. The 351 uses larger head bolts, but there may be some that will clear the plates, not mine.

I do not know if all 1 3/4 Supercomps use these sub plates. They so allow max flow with no restriction.

So what is a good estimate of horsepower and torque that I should gain with the hooker super comp. headers with 1 5/8 in primaries? How much if I do full 3in. exhaust all the way back?
Hey guys,
Yeah, 393tbird's got a good point. I've got my BBK wrapped around a T5 tranny no problem. They did go on like a breeze too. I just had an issue clearing the stock steering rag joint that required me to peen one of the primaries slightly. I didn't have any issues clearing cylinder head bolts at all, but mine are OEM bolts on Eddy RPM heads.
However, I do know a guy running the BBK's (except ceramic coated) around an AOD in his FOX chassis 'stang. I'll ask him if it took any extra work to fit them and get back to you soon.

im sorry, this is really off topic, but your t-bird was in 5.0 mustangs and fast fords a while back wasnt it? either that or MM & FF, i dont remember which, but your car almost inspired me to trade my stang for an s/c'ed 95 t-bird.
